I get the feeling that Kaguya's appearnce in the manga was just a way to sell tickets for the movie and make IT look like a bad thing by turning people into Zetsu.

According to the new databook translations:

1000 years ago, the Otsutsuki clan did come from another world indeed. And that, after the Ten Tails' defeat, Hamura and the rest of the Otsutsuki clan left for the Moon in order to guard the Gedo Mazo. And among other stuff, it calls Kaguya's third eye a "Rinnesharingan", her dimension shifting technique "Amenominaka", and Sasuke's teleportation thingy "Amenotejikara".

This going to the moon business obviously links in with the movie, so it's obviously canon. Hopefully we find out more about Kaguya's people via Toneri in the movie.
