Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

I'd agree that his marking decreased in the second-half but my analysis was for 1st half and sincerely, he was marked really tight in that half.

And there's another reason why he's marking went from 2-3 players to 1. The central midfielders - Veloso, Mereiles and Moutinho - got more offensive in the second half and this gave more space to Cristiano.

And gotta hand lots of credit to CR7 too. If we analyze all offensive players in this Euro, he gotta be the Best Player in the last 2 matches hands down.

Portugal are also pretty consistent in National Competitions now. Semi-Final is now a consistent stage for them and Ronaldo is the major cause today. Let's see if they can finally pull that next step which they always miss against France/Spain.
Well, the first half 30-35 mins of 1st half went good marking him, but the last 10-15 mins, they dropped actually thats when Ronaldo had good chances.

True, reason why Ronaldo prefers winger, as the other threats on his team cut him some slack when it comes marking him.

CR performances has been good, but I'd still say Inesita/Xavi up top in Euros right now with CR and Gomez behind them.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

You don't need those defenders. We've seen many national teams/clubs perform good defence without top class defenders it just takes focus, and the biggest threat on the pitch (Ronaldo) wasn't being pain enough.

I've noticed that with him, this is why Ronaldo prefers winger, because he gets less heat (defence wise), and can either set his own play up or someone else due to the room he gets.
True again, but that's usually why bigger and better team goes further. Not only because they have better strikers, but also better defenders as well. But of course, history has shown that is not always the case and that lesser known and good strikers/defenders have been able to done/stop the best of the best.

Yeah, it dropped but it was predictable. It's hard to keep up with a player who makes so much sprints at such speed for 45 minutes; let alone 90 minutes. And harder when you're not really the best of defenders. They were disciplined at the start but Ronaldo gained the upper hand slowly! So I won't say that Czech defense were careless to loosen the marking on a 60+ goal machine; they just couldn't after some minutes.

Perhaps, that's another reason onto why Messi's marking is more regular. Despite his amazing dribbling skills, Messi makes less run-ins and sprints that Ronaldo since the midfield always keep possession at Barca. Thus, though Messi tires his defenders less; though it's still hell hard to mark Messi. I'm just noting on the physical exhaustion factor; not on whose harder to mark.

I guess I know why Nadal and Ronaldo features on my favorite sportsmen list. They are physical machines that keeps going, keeps exhausting opponents and keeps trying.

I think CR7 has left Gomez far behind. Gomez has only been efficient and he can be thankful to possess Ozil and Schweinsteiger that hold the ball. Ronaldo is holding Portugal on his own and that deserves much credit.

Iniesta is the best player IMO in this Euro but offensively Ronaldo is the best right now and should deserve Top Scorer; especially after his posts hit. Xavi is his usual self but Silva is also key in Spain right now.

If I were to consider the remaining players who are still in this competition and ranked their performance, my Top 10 will be like that:

1. Iniesta
2. Ronaldo
3. Schweinsteiger
4. Pirlo
5. Xavi
6. Gomez
7. Silva
8. Gerrard
9. Ozil
10. De Rossi

He's been stopped before, and playing in Euros your squad must posses these abilities, to stop speed demons like Ronaldo. They just had lack of focus, as I said Ronaldo played winger, which benefits him because when crosses come in, all eyes go towards the centre as shown in Ronaldo goal, but he positioned himself and the defender seemed like he didn't even know Ronaldo was behind him, which led to the goal.

Portugal, lack only in midfield, they indeed have a good defence in all. They even kept Spain at bay in WC10.

Well it all depends. Look at Ribery/Robben, they come from the wing and most times have so much room, but aren't the best due to being old, arrogant, not the best of finishers, don't show conisistency, and selfish. They do pose threat from those spots tho (hence why Bayern did have a decent season). The best example is the two people on your list, Inesita/Silva playing as Spain wingers, the consistency between these two players is great, but they have plenty of room at times, which survey good for them, but they have that habit dropping back to mid and the whole possession play really kind of disrupts the flow for most wingers in Spain/Barcelona (This why we see are L/RB a lot coming from that flank). Messi played as winger in Pep first season winning the treble and Ballon (when Eto'o was there). He had more room to play around were as Eto'o was marked more. The thing about playing centre is, that majority of the time eyes are on you, and defenders lurk that area. Despite Messi not tiring the defenders out as much its a + for other teams, but yet Messi scores goal after goal. The reason why Messi doesn't sprint as much isn't the fact he can't as I said its Barcelona style that prevents it they play short passes and try to keep threat lurking in the mid field also, hence why are wingers are at times in mid field L/RB are in winger position, and defence is weak at that point.

Regardless Ronaldo improves every year as Messi does, so the winger position is always a plus. I do hope Villa gets back in form, or we sign another striker, and Messi goes back to winger to add a little more flow to the game and balance threat, At this time majority of the threat comes from the centre.

post hits = inconsistency. In WC Messi nailed the post many times and most Argentina goals came from Messi play yet people/media made a mockery out of it. It remains tho despite hitting the post, they lack in accuracy. The post doesn't even count as on target.

Your list is pretty straight forward all tho Ronaldo performance VS Germany/Denmark weren't the best, he'd still be in top 5 maybe 3, but I'd put Inesita and Schweinsteiger (1 and 2). Xavi and Pirlo another questionable one, in the Italy game, Xavi was the better one, but Pirlo has been a heavy impact for Italy till now, so I give him this one.

I would suggest Fabregas also. He would have been in top 5, but due to coming off bench I'll rank him lower. He against all odds manage to score the drawing goal VS Italy, and the best team work goal by my favs (Xavi, Iensita, Silva, and Fab). He did have one coming off the bench VS Ireland, and had his hand in the winning goal VS Croatia, were he did an amazing well timed pass to Inesita to set up Navas. Ireland and Croatia he was on bench, so did come on with a lot of energy hence why not top 5. Ozil has yet to have that big of an impact IMO.

My list till now

1. Inesita
2. Schweinsteiger
3. Ronaldo
4. Pirlo
5. Xavi
6. Gomez
7. Gerrad (He Has been amazing for Engalnd, I'd rank him before Gomez if I could, but than I'd only be neglecting Gomez accomplishments for his)
7. Silva
9. Fabregas
10. De Rossi

As Mikey said, I didn't include player who aren't in this competition anymore. Otherwise, I would have make place for more players; like Modric, Ibra, Dzagoev ect... Lahm is close indeed but I'd stick with my Top 0. He'll be on Top 20 sure though.

CR7 is really stepping up his game though. He practically gave his best in the last 2 matches. His goals and assist stats would have been crazy if he had better midfielder/striker to complement his amazing form. So, I don't know - perhaps, it was really hard to mark him. Doing it once doesn't always mean that you'll be able to replicate it.

It's as I said the other day. Once Eto'o was gone, the Barca play resolved around Messi. It's everyone serving him and him keeping a mobility. During Eto'o days, there was someone who was keeping defenders at bay but once Ibra came, he was asked to serve Messi also since he possess better skill than Eto'o in terms of keeping the ball.

Pep created a game resolving around Messi. So it isn't hard to figure why he's marked tightly. That system has it flaws and its advantages but it's like that. Ronaldo may be a star man in United/Madrid but the play wasn't created to suit him better.

I read an article with Aguero saying something like: "When he come in shooting-position, he always look to place it near the post. In that way, the goalkeeper's chance of stopping it decreases a lot and the remaining obstacles for him, to score are his own luck & own preciseness." Coming from a World-class striker, it do mean certain sense. Sure, the post is counted as off-target. But is it called inconsistent when it hit the post? With some luck, it goes in...

CR7 missed horrendous chances against Denmark and thus, was made a joke. However, he did an okay match overall, with lots of defensive work also. And Portugal nearly grabbed the draw/win against Germany; with Ronaldo doing an okay match. But, I still place Ronaldo higher; since he's the main reason why Portugal are in Semis. He gave his best in last 2 matches and you can see how much individual impact a player of his caliber brings.

But I agree with your ranking too. I'd still place Ozil instead of Fab since Ozil is a main reason why Germany finished first also. I considered Fabregas a lot to be frank. Didn't add him since he mostly played as a joker substitute. He did great entries but I'd like to see him perform a whole match. But not in a false 'No.9' like against Italy.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

You know, I listen sport news quite a lot and C.Ronaldo was getting criticize in the first 2 matches. But at the last 2 matches he proved himself as a leader in the Portugal team.
Right after that the analysts changed the way of talking about him and all agreed for him being the best player. And I was like "WOW, really?"
As there were other players that played good games, yeah, like Iniesta. Even over the net I read that he was the best till now. So, when I read your lists I got surprised as I was expecting some other lists where C.Ronaldo was number one. :p

I'm a fair analyst and right now, Ronaldo deserves the 2nd or 3rd spot on a 4-match basis. Still, except if someone does a hattrick of goals or a hattrick of assists, Ronaldo will end up the Best Performer of this Quarter-Final stage.

Till now, Iniesta has been extremely consistent and is the player in Spain who's showing the least fatigue symptoms despite an exhausting season. Barca, Madrid players and Silva all had exhausting seasons. Yet, Iniesta might be the one who shined the most despite that. He's a Spain lifeboat that just keeps floating no matter what.

Now, if Ronaldo delivers a 3rd knockout performance consecutively against either Spain or France, then I might need to revise my list.

Besides skills, there are certain 'special odds' that is making those 10 players stand out. They are electrifying despite the odds and that makes their performance even extra-ordinary.

Iniesta is so brilliant despite the lengthy season

Schweinsteiger is pulling Germany's midfield and in some matches, he did it on one leg.

Ronaldo is one of the 2 best players in the world right now and while he has been fantabulous in clubs, he was surrounded by class players there. Here, in National team, he's doing everything on its own. This is really something not to be undermine.

I really liked ; mostly everything I thought.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

Today's match bet:

Walk in the park or a tight match? Pushover or real contestant? Many things can be said about this match, but whether Germany crush Greece 4 or 5-0 or if they barely win by 1 or 2 goals is hard to say. We all know Greece football history and how they won the cup back in 2004. Nobody back then thought they had a chance, yet they won their last three matches 1-0 and won it all with help of a tight and organized defense, efficient strikers and some luck. The years to come they have been on and off, sometime preforming really bad against equal opponents and other times holding their own against bigger teams. It's hard to say, but I'm leaning on a 3-1 to Germany tonight.

Greece had George Clooney in the posts back then in 2004 and an angel as striker. That's not really the case now :p

They'll pose difficulties to Germany only if they play like against Russia. That is: disciplined in defensive tasks for 90 minutes, motivated by the captain courage Karagounis and helped by a fighting and efficient Samaras. If one of these don't work, they can start packing.

Greece did a poor match in first half against Poland and were too stereotypical against Czech; where they kept playing on Samaras who wasn't good. Repeat any of these performances (or worse than these) and I won't place a bet to see them as potential opponent of England/Italy.

Now, who knows, perhaps Germany might get overconfident and handed a bloke elimination.

However, it's a match that Germany has few chances to lose.

Btw Mikey, your bet score is usually close when you don't bet on hattricks of players; so who knows :p

Well yeah, I totally agree on your analysis :p And I also heard that Gomez, Müller and Podolski starts on the bence... Underestimating or smart play by Löw? We shall see.

Haha true, but if Ronaldo had a bit more luck yesterday he would have gotten his hattrick, maybe even a 4th goal with maximum efficiency. And if Portugal scored 3 or more goals, Czech would probably get one as well and it would have been 3-1 as I predicted. If I hadn't predicted anything at all, that would have been the score :p

Why don't you beat on the score for once? o__O Haven't seen you done once yet. Fearing that bad luck will strike? xd

Edit:

:omg: Both Escorp and Relax are writing big ass walls right now, better get my reading face on :zonder:

Well, this MessiVSRonaldo we are already discussing in the general football topic, so lets leave it for there :p As Messi, nor Argentina are competing in Euro, so irrelevant to this discussion. I'll respond to their positions/task over there.

Aguero is correct and every strikers mentality is like that to hit it towards the post, but the fact remains that if some hits the post 10 times in a game, and loses 1-0 at the end we can sit there saying he would have scored 10 goals, or even two to win, but the fact remains it was indeed poor finishing. In football terms considering the shot doesn't get counted for on target, and or even a shot, it is considered inconsistent. I remember playing FIFA 12 the guy I played online hit the post and ball went in his only shot and at the end his record shots (on target) was 1 (0) yet he won 1-0. Even if you lose coaches will fume at their striker, for not finishing.

Actually a lot of credit also goes to his defence also, sure like every other team Portugal defence isn't perfection, but it has own advantage. They have played well including keeping a team like Germany at bay, they slacked off due to thinking Denmark would be a bit easier, and Netherlands were just a terrible team this Euro.

Schweinsteiger/Gomez have been deadly thus far. Ozil still needs to make that impact, and I'm saying in this match with Greece we may see that. As I said Fab maybe the false #9, but he did well and saved us a point VS Italy, as well as giving us that victory VS Croatia, so he has had a more influential role in Spain than Ozil has with Germany. If I was to give you a match rating between the two in the three games it would be

Ozil 7
Fabregas 7.5

Fab could be easily performing up there with Inesita if he played the entire time with that same performance, hence why i rank him around 9-10, due to play one starting game. He's been a huge sub tho, making a difference when he comes on nevertheless.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

Fearing that bad luck will strike? xd
I'm not that surprised for Gomez. It's the best match to give him and some other players some rest. I'm surprised that Muller is not starting though. The trio Klose-Ozil-Muller was terrific in 2010. Given Schweinsteiger's thin form, he most likely will replace him after 60 min or so.

Perhaps, it's an underestimation by Löw but then again, they were in a Group of Death and on paper, this might be the easiest match they can get in this whole Euro. So yeah, Löw won't get a better opportunity to do a a turnover and play some more of his 23-men squad who won't get much playtime in big matches.

I don't bet on score cause most often, they are biased scores from my point. Unlike my analysis, it's hard for me to tell an unbiased score.

Actually, I won't mind to stop talking it at times, but it just keeps popping.

It's hard to see a team hit the post 10 times but I don't think it's inconsistent from the player. Sure, finishing could be better but there's such a minim difference between a post and a goal that I think at times, it's down to luck. A player might try the exact shot and scores on a good day but on a bad day... Also, strikers are now forced to use clinical finishing and shooting near post has become an obligation rather than an inconsistent move.

Christophe Lollichon (Pter Cech's trainer at Chelsea) said that he made Cech view all penalties of Messi twice and same/if not more for Robben. On top of that, he watched it 10 times or so to get a better idea and he also made Chelsea's replacement goalkeepers' view it at least once. And it's not only for Chelsea's goalkeeping. Mostly all top-class goalkeepers are now subjected to intense mental training and intense homework.

Goalkeeping has become much more elaborated nowadays with even harder and detailed preparations beforehand. I remember that an interviewer asked Barthez his secrets about how he stopped Ronaldo in 1998 and he replied that his coach said to him to forget every of his experience knowledge on the Genius Brazilian and to go by instinct. Those days are long gone now. Now, it's all about preparation. Everything from a player's running speed to his body positioning to his eyeblinks...Everything is scrutinized in modern football.

And it also happened to me in FIFA. Only difference is that I was leading 1-0 in that way and it was only at half-time.

Yeah, Portugal's defense has been very good but at times, they seem panicked. They need to defend with more concentration to prevent those surprises from occurring.

Still, I don't know if I can rate Fabregas 7.5 or plus in every match; considering he played few minutes. Perhaps, I would have placed him among the Top if he played as starter in either against Ireland or Croatia.

Come on :p It's always fun to bet, that's why I sign up with Unibet.com :p

If the Germans don't start taking chances they will pay for It in the 2nd half.
