I think spain will win it and we'll have a repeat in the final Spain vs Germany.

Is anyone else as disappointed as I am about the Netherlands? 0 points after playing in the final 2 years ago for the world cup?????? i know it was the "group of death" but come on.
Lol u don't wanna know how vexed I am about the match just plain and utter failure.

I pretty much agree with this one, although I personally think that Germany didn't impress me that much in their match with Portugal, even if they won.
I actually think that Portugal has impressed the most judging from how they've played and by the expectations people had towards them before the cup kicked off. I mean, Germany and Holland were "clear" favorites, but as we know, Holland ended up with 0 points and with a little more margins against Germany, Portugal could have won this group.

I would say;

1: Portugal.
2: Germany.
3: Spain.
Rest unchanged.

Still, I do see Germany and Spain as finalists at this point, but I have a feeling Portugal is going to surprise this time.

Oh, and the first day off for the players today, what do to instead?:p

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

As i said spain are more suited for us than italy. Sweden proved to us that when teams pack the bus and believe me the swedes packed the bus and were very rough. Identical to italy's style of play. Id take my chances with spain who actually play football than pack the bus. Also france are the few teams who can challenge spain in terms of possession but also quality in the starting 11 and on the bench.

Italy vs england would be one of the boring games, i can see it already. Both teams very cagey and cautious. Both would most likely use counter attacking and tbh i wouldnt be surprised if the game goes to penalties
what the hell are you talking about dude ?
Italy packed the bus in their play ?
they only have 4 defender in 2006 when they own the world and when playing against spain they only have 3 !!!!!, thought torres come and manage to break it but then again italy don't have 1 of their defender,

why don't you search CATENACCIO in Google before putting Italy in the same boat like Chelsea in the UCL

Possible. But I'd stick to my ranking.

Fact is that we can divide the ranking into 3 batches.

Favorites (Germany, Spain, Portugal), Strong (England, Italy and France) and Possible Surprises (Czech & Greece)

Unfortunately, it's thanks to Mou. Don't blame this guy. Mou, himself, called his defensive approach against Barcelona with Inter, a new Catenaccio version. Thereby, all teams who defend with 9-10 players (like in Catennacio) are said to Pack a Bus.

I personally don't care about this name tag and this defensive approach - in however way they call it. I regard offensive and defensive tactic as equally difficult to put in place in football.

I debated on whose more difficult a lot in the Debates thread and I ended with the conclusion that Defensive tactic is more mentally exhausting and Offensive tactic is more physically exhausting.

Still, it's true that 'Real' Catenaccio was not to be seen. Sure, I saw glimpses of it against Spain. Italy's approach was closer to the defensive Catennacio rather than Chelsea's tactic. But it's still not completely the real Catenaccio.

For those who are clueless about what we are talking about, read .

So, yeah, as I was saying it's not fully the Classic Catenaccio. Sure, Italy defended well with 3 defenders. Sure, the 2 players on the wing played as Right/Left-Backs and Also as wingers. Sure, those players did the Zonal marking which is an essence to Catenaccio. However, it's not complete.

That's because there is no one who can do the Libero part in Italy. The player ensured to play that part, are just defending in zones. So, that part is that same as Chelsea's way. The key innovation of Catenaccio was the introduction of the role of a libero but can we still call it Catenaccio without a libero?

I'd say Italy still has the soul of Catenaccio but unfortunately, due to lack of proper players and 2 strikers who are not as used to Catenaccio (especially Balotelli), it isn't really a true Catenaccio.

that was because they lose motta earlier in the game thanks to Sergio biscuit,
if not then i think inter will played like they did in the 1st leg when they beat barca 3-1.

true that, if you want to see real catanaccio, viewed Germany vs Italy in WC Final 1982 Semi Final WC 1982 Italy vs Brazil and WC semi Final 2006 Gemany vs Italy match,

you will, you will see how baresi blocked the germany attackers and Brazilian jogo bonito , and how cannavaro act like iron pillar stopping klose and podolski,

well yeah, almost all Italian striker is big and strong, Baggio,Vieri and the last time we know luca toni and iaquinta, thought Balotelli is also have that criteria he don't get use to play with Italian football style, long pass and through pass from the middle of the field,

and you're missing one thing they need an trequartista(attacking midfielder)
they need someone like this accompanying pirlo in the middle,
like this guy for example

It's tough to make Balotelli play in a defensive tactic. You need discipline for that and I'm not sure if Balotelli can even spell that word; let alone apply it U_U

True, an Attacking Playmaker/Midfielder will help them but I think it's not a necessity. Pirlo is playing the playmaker role admirably well; even if he's less offensive. Personally, they don't have a problem in that section as much as you say. Their 2 midfielders -Pirlo and whoever is with him - arrive to hold the play well. De Rossi is wonderful but he's still not a libero. He's just great defensively, that's it. He does not do the swift sweeping motion and counter initiation as well. It's really a libero which is a must. They can just hope that De Rossi will end up fitting that role more and more. He's Italy's best option for that post anyways.

Totti lost his form unfortunately since 2-3 years. Giovinco is very promising also and is an attacking midfielder.

I'd also like to pay tribute to a legendary Shevchenko who announced his Ukrainian retirement. Respect!

that's why to do that they need someone like totti to supply the ball for balotelli, since totti is more offensive compared to pirlo, they will have more variation in the front with pirlo provide the long pass and totti with his through and acrobatics pass,

well actually totti still have his form, but because injury we barely see him play, but once he did you will see he still have the magic that lead Rome claim the scudetto in 2001 thought his speed is decreasing but his skill stay the same and even better.......

giovinco huh ? hmhmhmh yeah he's fast but not quite the player that italy need in this campaign, marchisio is better i daresay...........

Possible but I'm still skeptical to the use of Totti. But I understand your point of view. Obviously, each fan has his own version of how they'd like their team to play. That's natural.

And Giovinco is also a pretty good passer; along with being fast. He's also polyvalent and can play as offensive playmaker, offensive winger or as second striker.

really ? because in his parma days and in this euro i barely see him making any good pass for the forward player, but i do agree about him being a great winger

He's playing as substitute. That can't help him. Personally, he's better than Marchisio in my opinion but he got more offensive intent than defensive. Also, his passing is good but perhaps, his field-analysis is not as good as Pirlo or Marchisio but he still got great passing skills.

Basically, IMO, Italy has most number of players with Italian DNA but there are quite a number like Balotelli, Giovinco, Borini ect... who's fitter to offensive plays.

And there are 2 ways to use these players efficiently - either blend them in the team to bring a diversity in their tactic or make them play in unison with rest of squad.

Using them as substitute jokers ain't going to help them to make Italy progress. And they can't be used to carry Italy's team on their shoulder when their defensive tactic will fall either.

It's no secret that a player is better in National Team when he feel the same ease as when he's in his Club. That what'll Prandelli needs to achieve for these 'different' players.
