^Right. And we see Sasuke complain about Itachi to Fugaku when he was a kid. When Fugaku replies that he doesn't understand Itachi and that he's distanced himself from him, Sasuke feels better in a way, because he can now spend more time with his father and now Fugaku pays attention to him. He wasn't too concerned with what was happening to Itachi or how he was feeling at the time. Sasuke was just concerned with himself and how his father thought about him. He looked at Itachi for a goal to be passed. Itachi was a set standard for him, something he wanted to beat eventually so that he could say that he was better and get everyone's acknowledgement in the clan, predominently Fugaku's. Meanwhile, Itachi cared for the clan's honor, the village, and Sasuke's well-being. The two were focused on completely different things at the time. Sasuke primarily on himself, Itachi on everything and everyone else excluding himself. However, I suppose this is expected, considering that Sasuke was a naive, sheltered child at the time, while Itachi was an early teen who had seen the pitfalls of the shinobi world since even before Sasuke's age at the time, pretty much since the moment he was born considering he was born during war times.
