Bayern München vs Juventus
Stadium: Fußball Arena München, Munich (GER)
Quarter Finals - 1st leg

This game may look more like an ''international match'' Germany-Italy but it totally isn't. A lot of rumors say that Juventus will beat Bayern, just because Italy won against Germany on EURO 2012. That weak loss for Germans got a nickname like ''Germans have problems with Italian football''. Actually this isn't even a reason why Juventus can beat Bayern. A good/funny comment by Muller was: "Actually, we went through against Fiorentina (in the 2009/10 round of 16) and we beat Napoli in the group stages last year, thank you very much!" Bayern even won 4-1 against Juve in 2009/2010 ChL Group-stages. Lahm (Bayern) also commented: ''We can crack Juve''. ''We've got some very good players and can combine them to great effect, as we did against Hamburg at the weekend. In this game, every loss of concentration will be ruthlessly punished and we can't allow that to happen, especially at home.''
So (''Bayern'')Germany-Italy(''Juventus'') has nothing to do with this match.

This game, has no favorite. Juventus are unbeaten in 9 ChL games, sending a ''scary message'' to Bayern by making them know that Juventus has a very good defence! Bayern can be called ''the better team'' but, Juventus is ''the dangerous team''. Even if Bayern may have a weaker defence, they have a better attack...The opposite for Juve. As for midfield they look equal.

Possible line-up for Bayern will be:
Neuer - Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba - Gustavo, Schweinsteiger - Muller, Kroos, Ribery - Mandzukic

For Juventus:
Buffon - Barzagli, Chiellini, Bonucci - Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Asamoah - Matri, Quagliarella

Bayern's last amazing BundeLiga game warned Juve. Smashing Hamburg 9-2, 4 goals from Pizarro, 2 from Robben, etc. Robben was a key player, but the whole team made a perfect match.
I think Bayern came back to their cool form. From some close results in the BundesLiga (1-0; 3-2; 2-1) and a shocking loss in the Champions League (0-2 against Arsenal) to a 9-2 ''warm-up'' win!
But, we shouldn't forget Juve's last match, 2-1 win against Inter.

The 1st leg, is at Bayern's home stadium so they should totally be the better team! Losing at home, can destroy everything. Their team-spirit and their big hopes of winning the name ''European Champions''.
But don't overrate Juventus! Both teams are strong and have their own different weakness.

Conte's comments:
Bayern are a reference point for us; not just on the pitch, but also as a club. How things are working here, this is just great. Of course we are looking for weaknesses. We have studied them and prepared very well. We know our strengths and their weaknesses, even if they have few. We are talking about a team who are always able to score at least one goal, who are always capable of winning the game and who are always able to come back.

Buffon:
We know how strong we are. It will be different to three years ago [Juventus lost 4-1 to Bayern in the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League]. That game was a real shame, we played horribly and my back was hurting in the end as I had to pick the ball out of the net four times.

Toni Kroos:
Juve is a great name in European football and of course they will be a hard and strong opponent. Juve, from my point of view, is the strongest team after Barcelona. They will be very strong in defence like always. It is an Italian team. It would be ideal not to concede a goal. Our aim is to win the game. We want to travel to Italy with best chance to go through to the semi-finals.

Muller:
We are concentrating hard and we know it will be difficult. Of course we are not expecting a 9-2 win again. This will be a completely different game to last Saturday against Hamburg. It will be extremely important not to concede a goal. All the offensive players will have to do their share of defensive work. Our last game against Juventus was a very important one. We won it and it was kind of turnaround of our season in 2009/2010. So I have really good memories.

Bayern team news:
While David Alaba was rested and therefore absent from the squad against Hamburg, Mario Gomez was missing with a muscle strain. The versatile Luiz Gustavo replaced Alaba and played at left-back for the first time this term.

Juve team news:
Mirko Vučinić (flu) sat out the Inter match but trained on the eve of the match. Sebastian Giovinco, who received a bad knock to the ankle in the final minutes against the Nerazzurri, is also in the squad. Conte said he "would not know until tomorrow" on Vučinić. Giorgio Chiellini recovered from his own ankle problem to play from the start on Saturday.

Quarter Finals - 1st leg
Well, you said it all, I must say :p As you clearly pointed out, Bayern got the better attack and Juve, the better defence. Still, I see Bayern's defence to weaker than Juve's attack but Bayern got the home advantage.

Confirmed Lineup:

Bayern Munich line-up: Neuer; Lahm, Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba; Gustavo, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Kroos, Ribery; Mandzukic.
Juventus line-up: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Peluso; Matri, Quagliarella.

What I'll add is another of Bayern's forte will be the usage of wings. With their offensive full-backs and guys like Ribery/Muller, their best chance in this match will be in that aspect. Robben can also add to that when he might enter. Juve's reinforced defensive midfield is gonna be tough to break, even for a good midfield such as Bayern.

On Juve, what's good besides their defence, is their ability to score out-of-nowhere goals. They are highly efficient in counters, scored lots of goals from far shots with many of their players having powerful far shots, and with Pirlo - they possess someone exceptional on set-pieces. Quagliarella, Pogba, Pirlo, Marchisio, Matri & co. scored some highly unconventional and sublime goals, this season - so this is gonna be interesting.

These factors are perfect, for a team who wants to score an away-goal. I see Juve, as the Away team that is toughest to play; because this is where they can do most damages - with resistance defence, counters and possibly away-goal/s.

Also, interesting duels to be seen between Neuer/Buffon, Pirlo/Schweinsteiger, Marchisio/Kroos, Vidal/Gustavo...

Personally, I see a high-scoring draw for this first-leg - like 2-2 or 3-3.

PSG vs FC Barcelona
Stadium: Parc des Princes, Paris (FRA)

Well, to be honest, I wanna see both matches. Many give PSG as heavy underdogs but I won't go to that extent. Yes, Barca are favorites but PSG have a better chance, than let's say, AC Milan had...

Confirmed Lineup:

Paris Saint-Germain line-up: Sirigu; Jallet, Alex, Silva, Maxwell; Beckham, Matuidi; Lucas, Pastore; Lavezzi, Ibrahimovic.
Barcelona line-up: Valdes, Alves, Mascherano, Pique, Alba; Sergio, Iniesta, Xavi; Villa, Messi, Alexis.

Well, no surprises in Barca's lineup - though some may see Alexis instead of Tello questionable and the quick returns from injury of Xavi/Alba are risky gambles. Big surprise though with Les Parisiens, with Beckham over Verrati though.

But as I said, PSG have a better chance than Milan had. Sirigu is better than Abiatti, the central defence of Silva/Alex is also better, Beckham/Matuidi have much better look, the foursome Lucas, Pastore, Lavezzi, Ibrahimovic are certainly going to pose more issues that what Muntari/Boateng/Pizzaro/El Shaarawy did...

Tactically, we all know what Barca are gonna do and I guess, we do also know what they shouldn't do (that is, a replica of the match they did at San Siro).

It's gonna be interesting how Lucas/Pastore deal with Alba/Alves in both offense/defence. Undoubtedly, one of the key points of this match. Pastore's key improvement with Ancelloti have been his defensive works on the wings, and his permutations with Lavezzi. With Alvez being attack-prone, that combo might be something to deal for Barca's defense. But similarly, PSG's weakness are their full-backs with Jallet/Maxwell not good enough in my eyes. And we saw in last week's France/Spain, how Monreal/Iniesta/Pedro/Villa/Navas ect... tormented the full-backs...Iniesta/Alba/Alves/Sanchez are equally strong opponents as the Spanish I just named.

Another point is the Lavezzi-Ibra combo. Both like to alternate between No.10 and No.9 positions and both got different styles. Ibra is a lethal finisher (as No.9) and a holding striker and pivot player (as No.10) while Lavezzi is a speedster and dribbler (as No.10) and a poacher (as No.9). This diversity is highly interesting. Ibra will be used when PSG's defence will play long balls to clear the pressure from Barca's possession spells but similarly, Lavezzi will propose a through-ball runner option... The dribbling style and through-ball speedster are tactics that were very successful for Di Maria & CR7 in recent classicos against Pique and co. That's something to watch.

Last tactic I'm interested to see is the marking aspect. Matuidi is a great player to try to pressure Xavi/Busquets to try to make these 2's passing game less fluid and deadly. Verrati would have been a great guy to man-mark Messi, and I certainly don't see Becks do that. So, will Messi be simply zonal-marked. To be seen... It will be interesting to see to what extent will Lavezzi defend!

With that lineup, I think Ancelloti played Becks to play long-passes to Ibra and the 2 fastest players in PSG - Lucas & Lavezzi. But for that tactic to succeed, it depends on how much Beckham can do well and how much, Lucas & Lavezzi won't be tired by the defending. Speaking of Becks, I'm glad to see him play a high-caliber CL match - well-deserved! Though, I wished he was in his prime as the opposition do feature 2 of the best-ever midfielders in Xavi/Iniesta. Sure, Becks is historically in that league but how much is good at this age, we shall see...

Psychologically, both teams got 2 plus points - Barca just made a comeback in their last CL encounter and Vilanova is said to return. And PSG is playing CL against all these years against Barca in a high-glitz fixture and they are playing home.

Lastly, it's another Ibra/Messi indirect battle (not first time though) and no need to remind the history.

Hopefully, it's a great match. It has lots of star players but it depends on which team (of if both) will bring their A-Games or which might have a bad one...I see PSG had many bad games this season - though they've been good in nearly all CL matches and we've seen Barca lose focus at San Siro and in certain Classicos.

Shame on Barca for their horrid defense with only 20 seconds to go. The Barca-Psg game was a well played game, even though there were a couple of questionable calls.

Bayern just flat out dominated Juve, even though both there goals were a tad bit lucky.

Oh dear. Barcelona defence is myth they don't seem to exist. The PK was questionable call, but I'm assuming it was right decisions as keeper got Sanchez and he did do a nice job to get the ball away from the keeper to get that contact. Ibra goal was offside, it seemed two PSG players were in that offside position, I don't know if it was a Barca player who hit the ball or PSG and don't know if it hits the wood work would it still stand as an offside? I think Escorps can answer that for me. Ibra was the tallest player, I don't know they didn't catch the offside.

Messi was taken off at half I guess to avoid further injury, or delay in recovery for his hamstring injury. It was funny after the 2nd PSG goal he looked up to the sky and is probably think, "F I need to pull another Milan like performance." I have to say a 2-2 draw was good enough tho we should've gotten the victory, however this is football and with the defence we have I don't think were worthy of going into the next round its really a shame of how bad they perform and they expect Messi to always outscore the opposing team and at the end when Messi doesn't show up he gets the all the bad press. Truly it is Messi that makes Barcelona tick and its because of him we've won the league title pretty early, tho still a slight chance for Madrid.

PSG vs FC Barcelona - 2-2
Stadium: Parc des Princes, Paris (FRA)

Well, I ended up seeing this match; given that Bayern's ultra-early goal killed some suspense while this one seemed like more-on-the-edge. And I don't really regret it tbh. But, I'd like to see your review, God of War, though if I'm not wrong - mostly it can be said that Bayern dominated the match as the early goal disrupted Juve.

Back to PSG-Barca: A 2-2 draw - with a brilliant goal, a controversial goal, a late-penalty and a late late dramatic equalizer...

PSG started off on hot reels with Lavezzi hitting the post. 3 interesting things in this match that I'll elaborate below:

- The match was a very open one in the first 25 minutes...
- Surprisingly, Messi was man-marked by Pastore afterall...
- Beckham played really deep, like a libero/deep playmaker that played lots of long ball.

I was actually surprised by the intensity and pace of the first 25 minutes by PSG. Lavezzi, Ibra, Pastore all had great chances that wasn't netted in while Iniesta & Messi also had 2 curled shots respectively. The good first 25 minutes can be attributed to many things - Matuidi had great work rate, Silva was bossing the defense without the team needed to park the bus, Lucas was exceptional against one of the best LB in the world, Beckham long ball and corners were always dangerous... Lots of good things but then came the bad part...

They dropped a bit in intensity or 5 minutes as Barcelona possession spell grew and with a fantastic ball by Alves, Messi volleyed it past Sirigu clinically. Afterwards, the match tilted in Barcelona's favor as they kept possession till end of first half; with PSG psychologically affected. A twist though, saw Messi getting a hamstring injury and he was subbed by Fabregas.

PSG started second half by playing less deep but with a fatigued Beckham, Lucas and Lavezzi, they weren't creating as much dangers in that half. What made it tougher is that Barcelona's possession spell intensified. With Messi gone, there were less dangers created but also, the team was bossed then by Xavi/Iniesta, who started playing the game to their own pace...

Then came one of the turning point with 20 minutes left to play, Verratti replaced Beckham and induced some freshness in midfield. They had a good spell then with some controversy... On a corner, Alba/Mascherano self-collided into each other, a through-ball was given to Ibra who wasn't offside since being covered by the 2 players down. Ibra did a poor volley but Barca players went furious that the referee kept the play going but it was legit. Another legit decision saw that referee leaving Barca temporarily to 9 men; as he didn't allow Mascherano/Alba for the follow-up corner. I don't want to rub salt but rule-wise, it's a correct decision and it will serve as lesson to all players who like to "act" on the ground. Anyways, nothing happened and they were allowed on the field again but on a following free-kick a minute later, T.Silva did a wonder header that ended on the post but Ibra netted it on the second-ball to make it 1-1. A goal that was crucial but controversially, it was offside but not given...All of that to resume a positive PSG spell with lots of unusual referee decisions; some correct and ultimately, a wrong one as the goal was offside.

Just as we were moving towards a 1-1 draw with both teams having minor chances, a moment of foolishness led to Sirigu to foul Sanchez. A clear penalty that was sanctioned with the ever-so-calm Xavi. 2-1 and as many buried PSG then... Valdes mirrored Sirigu in the dying instants. Ibra pivoted the ball towards Matuidi who shot with first-touch. His shot got deflected enough that Valdes merely ill-fully touched the ball and let it past him. A 2-2, full of hope for PSG - who now needs to beat Barca in whatever score to qualify in the Camp Nou. Remain perilous and largely impossible, but certainly far better position than if it remain 1-2 for Barca.

Player-ratings wise:

Sirigu did a good match; with his penalty foul as sole bad point. T.Silva is clearly the man of the match imo - did some outstanding clean tackles in 1-on-1 situations, always well-positioned, well-poised, bossed his defence with authority, hit the post with his header in lead-up to first equalizer, spirited his team back after Xavi's penalty as true captain. Great showing by perhaps the best current CB in world football. Alex partnered Silva well in his task. Maxwell & Jallet offered certain good things offensively and were good in small instants in defence, but most of the times, terrorized by Alves, Sanchez and others...

Beckham played a key role in the first great unrewarded 25 minutes of PSG. His long ball were precise and accurate, barely missed a pass, and his free-kick/corner brought danger always; even if his team didn't score. Got tired in second-half though and rightfully substituted. Verrati brought another fighting game with his replacement and was very good...If given a half each to shine, both players can brought different albeit interesting things to PSG, but overall, Veratti is one of the key future players in this in-build-up process of PSG team. Matuidi was very good, did his defensive positioning well in first half and as his team needed a comeback, in second-half, he kept going forward and harassed the midfield and got up a oh-so-important goal at the last moment....

Lucas was exceptional in first half, his dribbling skills are magical and gave lots of problems to Alba/Busquets. He's also Paris' fastest player and one of the layer with the most pace in today's game. At many instants, Barca players had to gang up on him with 2-3 players to stop him...His only flaw is his lack of stamina as he clearly was much much less dangerous and explosive in second-half. Can't have it all! Lavezzi sent a chill in the first instants, afterwards did lots of interesting run-ins but often awfully served. Menez replaced him without much greater success...Pastore had 2 tasks: Mark Messi to some extent and partner Matuidi in midfield passing as Beckham remained deep-lying. He did both tasks averagely. He marked Messi in some instants well but he dropped it completely in the goal and that costs his team.

Ibrahimovic had a bad match; though it can be said that he had rather a good match as he scored and made an assist...Tbh, he got lots of balls - at times, he was interesting but most of the times, he was wasteful as his passes were wrongly-timed and his dribbles rarely cut the ice. One good solo moment of his, was when he forced Pique to foul him and his free-kick forced Valdes to a good save. Still, as said, he was important today - he may have missed many finishing chances but he did score a goal - yes, a tap-in! yes, offside! But still, crucial! And what was also magnanimously crucial was his assist to Matuidi...

Valdes nearly made 2 great matches - against France and today; until he made that last mistake...Sad but so-Valdes-like! Alves was probably the best Barca player. Always bringing danger on his wing, he was constant nuisance to Pastore/Maxwell and also did a delightful assist to Messi. Pique and Mascherano were average. Alba had a torrid first half against Lucas, seem limited offensively due to his recent injury but still was as always dependable. Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets were as usual great and after Messi got injured, they upped their game as possession became more important. A boss-like performance exemplified by Xavi's cool penalty. Messi got more room than usual and he scored a goal. His injury though abrupt his performance.

Fabregas came on, was good with his passes and running; that as so often, didn't create much danger. Villa was pretty transparent in terms of offensive danger, Tello didn't bring much either as a late replacement. Sanchez had 2 good chances that he wasted and provoked the penalty, so a bit better performance than Villa/Tello/Fab imo.

Overall, it's a good result stat-wise for Barca but a hopeful result for PSG. I think, the draw was a deserving finish. Perhaps, PSG's goal was offside and the other was due to a Valdes blunder but in their overall showing, they showed interesting things. And they actually grabbed that result by playing their own game without a 'highly-defensive' tactic.

correct me if am wrong, since the ball hit the post then its not an offside....
Not sure, but I was wondering the same thing. It does make sense if it was when a shot hits a post, its considered off target (for some reason), hence since the shot was taken when Ibra was offside thats the way many looked at it in calling it offside. If Valdes would've touched the ball would be legal, but it hit no Barcelona player on its way and Ibra was in offside position. Heck even the linesman was confused with this call.

The offside doesn't depend on who deflect it. It could have been the post , Valdes or a defender, Ibra would have remained offside. The offside is determined when Silva made first contact with the header. At that point, Ibra exceeded the offside line, thereby if he was the next PSG player to touch the ball, he should have been called offside. I guess, the linesman didn't saw Ibra being offside when header contact was made...

Recently, I saw an interesting documentary on how a ref cam was used in rugby and American football and its pros/cons ect... It gives a good perception of how a referee saw things live in his sight...And in case of a bad call, you can understand if he made a deliberate mistake or when he didn't clearly saw certain things. I think, it could have been interesting to be used in football. Unlike, replays that would take time or goal-line tech that would be costly, this one could be a cheap solution. It won't have a direct impact but it would serve as evidence of to what extent the referee was efficient.

I thought that as well.

The day that would happen is when Platini, Blatter, or both step down and the next person in charge decides to bring it in. He may to get the public on his side.

I agree.. Pains me to see so many solutions available and none used...

Personally, there are certain things that I did find okay with Blatter but I can't say the same for Platini. I'm nearly in disagreement with everything he has done and especially what he says/his view on football. The only thing I was partially agreeing to, was the FFP, which is more and more looking as useless and bogus method that was used to gain votes.

Bayern Munchen vs Juventus
Stadium: Fußball Arena München, Munich (GER)
Quarter-Finals 1st leg

A clean sheet, control of the game and a victory! This was Bayern's goal on this match. After that shocking early goal, the clean sheet became more important for Bayern. Now, if we take a look at Juventus, they were hardly able to create a chance and break the defence. Pirlo was Juve's key player, but he can't do all the work alone.

As a first-half, Bayern tried to put pressure on Juve and they did that very well. Juve wasn't being able to get on their own gameplay. The bavarian midfield and defence blocked the dangerous attacks and most of the time won the ball against Juve forward and midfield players. Bayern was playing an attacking game, but even if they have a very good attack, Juve's defence was very well organized and solid.
Alaba's shocking goal, was unexpected for both teams, but it gave Juve a very negative effect. They started making some dangerous tackles against Ribery, Kroos (who got injured), Robben, Mandzukic.
Before the match, I gave Juventus the nickname ''The dangerous team'', but I didn't saw any dangerous attacks or chances from Juventus.

The statistics of the first-half told everything. 10 shots Bayern, 2 Juventus. 60% possession for Bayern, 40% possession for Juventus. Bayern dominated everywhere.

The second-half wasn't very different. Bayern with the same gameplay but with less pressure. From that less pressure, Juventus at least was able to pass and create a few chances but the defence of Bayern did the job very well. Bayern still, kept the possession and concentration. After some off-target shots from the bavarians Muller scores the next goal! Gustavo shot from a long distance. That shot was unexpected for Buffon, but he has able to stop it. Mandzukic was in front of him and took the ball. He wasn't able to score from that position so he passed it to Muller quickly, and Muller easily finished the action.

Bayern had some good chances to score a third goal but lost them. Bayern showed that they don't fear no one and they are the better team.

Well, even if Juventus was a lot weaker than Bayern, to be honest, they had a good defence. The goals were a little lucky.
Even if Bayern are favorites on the next game, they shouldn't lose concentration.
''We have been warned once, by Arsenal. It wasn't something good, but we learned a lesson.''- Robben said.

Everyone was overrating Juventus. I was overrating them myself! Still, Bayern should keep their form. They should know that Juventus will play a different game. They will try to find a different way to get out of Bayern's pressure. They should make something better. If they won't, they might even lose the second leg.

Italian clubs are getting weaker and weaker, while German clubs are getting better and better, especially Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen.
FC Bayern München are in pole position to reach the ChL semi-finals for the third time in four seasons after ending Juventus's 18-match unbeaten run in Europe.
Bavarians totally deserved the victory and played a great football. Heynckens is doing his job very well.

Heynckens' comment:
''I've studied Juventus and our aim was to put pressure on them early to take [Andrea] Pirlo out of the game, which worked very well. It's a fantastic achievement to keep a clean sheet against an Italian team.''

Conte's comment:
''I have to be honest and admit that we just faced a better team today. We knew it would be a difficult game but we also know that football is unpredictable and that we'll have to do something great in the return leg.''

Schweinsteiger's comment:
''My gut tells me that we needed another goal. We had a few good chances to get a third, but let's not forget we kept a clean sheet and the defence did very well.''

From all of that cool football, Bayern felt the need of a third goal at the end, and at the end of the game. Still, a 2 goals lead and a clean sheet are enough for a strong team like them to block Juventus' work again.

Well said God of War. However I wouldn't ride the high horses yet. Bayern tend to usually control the first game and eventually do mess up in the second leg. They led on away goal VS Inter (a weak side) in 10-11 season and blew it on away goal. Against Madrid last year was the same issue, they beat them in the first leg and let them come back however advanced VIA PK. This season, tho I know they lost focus, but they almost allowed Arsenal to make a comeback. I expect a fight at the Old Lady next week from Juve.

Messi after Barcelona conceded the second goal. Probably thinking, "F me. I have to pull another Milan like performance."

This season, tho I know they lost focus, but they almost allowed Arsenal to make a comeback. I expect a fight at the Old Lady next week from Juve.

Messi after Barcelona conceded the second goal. Probably thinking, "F me. I have to pull another Milan like performance."
Yes, you are right at that. The only reason I ''rode the high horses'' for Bayern is because they learned a lesson from Arsenal. Heynckens won't make the same mistake, the team too. I think they lost against Arsenal, because they underrated them, just because they won 3-1.
I believe they won't let Juve play like that. They took it very serious, and they will finish it just like that.

Btw, Messi's reaction looks very funny. xd
