Because the support that she garners reflects positively for the transsexual community. It's the same reason why people want more minority and female main characters in movies and TV: Representation. The media and its spotlight can be used for good and this is an example of one of them. The media reports about Caitlyn, people respond with positive feedback, the transsexual community sees this feedback, and that positiveness is reflected in how they feel. Because Caitlyn is a celebrity, they have someone they can look at and go "There are people supporting people like us, accepting people like us, being treated like people. We are people." It's all about the positive reinforcement. If you don't care, then simply tune out. If it comes up on TV, mute it or change the channel. If you see a thread or article about it, don't read it. You have a choice as to how exposed to this you are. Don't click on a thread about the topic and then go "I'M SO SICK OF THIS TOPIC", you made the choice to be exposed to it.

Kinda hard to do when acceptance bs is thrown at your face at every turn, and basic competitions and awards are assigned not for best performance but for changing gender or being some new social minority.

She wasn't given the award solely for being transgender, but for the difficulty the transition has because of her social status. And quite honestly, a lot more good was served giving her the medal than it would have if given to the soldier. Did he do more to earn it? Sure, I'd say so. But the impact is bigger and the community that would be supported needs it more than the community of soldiers do.
