No it wasn't Tobi who was trying to protect Konoha (he could care less about it) it was Danzo who wanted to protect it by allying himself with Tobi to leave the village alone, and to frame up the Uchihas, what Tobi wanted was merely to frame up the Uchihas, Danzo wanted both: to frame up the Uchihas, and make Madara promise to leave Konoha alone by helping him out.

I agree with all of it besides the protection part. Mardara would still hate the village. Madara is the type to backtrack on his words and betray you.

Danzo was desperate, he needed someone to eliminate the Uchihas, if Tobi/Madara would keep their word or not is a moot point.

great theory!! Knowing Danzo, it wouldn't be too farfetched to say he would accept the devastation of Konoha just for "the greater good".

Also, if I may add another bird to your stone: the posibillity of him becoming Hokage; I'm pretty sure he had this somewhere in the back of his mind...and what better chance? The same story as in the Pein Arc, only that this time Konoha wasn't destroyed.

Yeah, that may have been Danzo's "third bird" that the attack would kill Hiruzen and Minato so that he could assume the mantle of Hokage.

Another great theory! I always try to explain to people that obito had an ulterior motive for causing kurama's attack (shifting blame onto the uchiha), and this theory illustrates that idea very well
