Why do people assume that if you read a manga you have to like the MC?

If you still enjoy the series without liking(or you hate) the MC, its either you like the rival of the MC or the current relevant villian. How else do you still enjoy the manga then? Maybe you don't really care about the series and just want to know where it ends which equals you not enjoying the series just pushing through every week.

His personality was excusable in part 1 ....he was a child...it was kinda funny...but now the guys is 17? Yea the way he acts sometimes...well.....most times, irritates the **** out of me. I actually hardly ever like main characters in any kinds of fiction. I can still enjoy the story and other things.

Naruto is one of the few protagonists that I actually kind of like - simply because of how cheerful and optimistic he is, I just wish there was no savior stuff.

Does the name really matter though? It could have been called "Shinobi" or something; the story isn't even being told from Naruto's perspective and we are often shown what other characters are doing, sometimes even those who have never met Naruto (like how the story followed Danzo for a while during the Kage Summit).

If you are watching a movie about Superman named after him it doesn't mean you have to like Superman.

There is more to this manga than Naruto Uzumaki. I want to know how Sasuke will end up. I want to know if all the villages will unite and become one. I want to know if Sasuke will lead his own new Uchiha clan. I want to know how the outbreak of the Naruto and Sasuke battle will commence. I want to know if Sakura will end up with Naruto or just by some stupid reason she ends up with Sasuke. I want to know if the Bijuu's will be destroyed or saved. I want to know how Hashirama was killed. I want to know if Obito will live or die in the end. I want to know if Sasuke will go back to the leaf or go his own separate path. I want to know if Madara will come back. I want to know about the different clans and how they originated. I want to know who Hamura is. I want to know if Kaguya is an alien or not.

There is more to this manga than Naruto Uzumaki. I can use plenty of examples from Bleach and One Piece.

the thread has managed to voice part of my opinion on naruto and his fans...
but in general I'm just apathetic about him , yet I still find enjoyment in a plethora of other characters in the series, be them antagonists or protagonists .

Well you have to like the main character to some degree to be able to stand watching the series. Because they are the most important and probably most featured in most cases. If you really hated the MC that much then you wouldn't be able to stand watching it. At least that's how i see it.
