Minato died protecting the village and yet failed to stop Tobi. Itachi failed in certain areas because he decided to go this way, refusing the way of glory and making him out to be the hated Ninja who will die of Sasukes hand. He however didn't take Tobi fully into account, just like Minato failed in the end, and yet he was prepared for the case Sasuke would still turn against the village, by giving Naruto Kotoamatsukami. But of course not anything goes according to plan, as there are thousands of factors that can change the whole future; Kabuto used him with Edo Tensei and turned this technique against the Shinobi alliance, making Itachi to be the one who will stop Kabuto and the Edo Tensei. That Madara was smart enough to free himself from the contract with Edo Tensei is not Itachis failure, he managed to beat Kabuto and to end the Edo Tensei.Minato's plans never failed. All Itachi's plans failed. Do the math
Itachi showed far more feats of his intelligence, he was supposed to have a Hokages wisdom at an age of 7. In what terms Minato surpasses Itachis intelligence? Because he analyzed Obitos abilities like a few others did too and managed to catch him off guard thanks to a technique that allows him to do? A pity these Minato fans, I'm sorry.
