The Escorp's FT Analysis
0-0 between Italy-England.
- Anyways, Italy deserved it; though England defended admirably well against a valiant Italy. They purposely tried to go through PKs but it didn't worked well unfortunately.
- The second half kept the end of second-half rhythm; that is in favor of Italy. And that was the case till end of extra-time; where they kept trying to score goals.
- Despite the 0-0, this match was great to watch though. Quite suspenseful till the end with I think the total shots should be 30-10 approximately. So, yeah, 40 shots in a 0-0 - that exists.
- In fact, Italy did all to score. Attacked from center to both flanks. Varied from shot to long passes but none paid. 1 bar, 1 post, 1 offside goal, lots of interceptions and saves by Gerrard, lots of misses and lots of screwed chances.
- England defended a lot. For those bitchin' about it, argue all you want - it's wonderful that they didn't conceded a goal despite 30+ shots probably.
- They also gained some nice chances. Besides the chances in 1st half, they tried certain things. Rooney couldn't smashed a freekick of Gerrard. His 92th minute bicycle kick was mistimed as he kicked it with the tip of his shoe. Young got a shot deviated barely. Oh well...still, Italy dominated them clearly on that fronts.
- I'd get to the players and I'll salute a masterclass player first - Andrea Pirlo! Some wonderful long balls and it's blasphemy that Italy didn't score with such delightful passes. At his age, he ran a lot and dictated his team's midfield. And to close such a great performance, he did a panenka during the shootouts. The class of legendary players. Hats-off.
- Ballotelli missed some chances especially in first half but he stayed in the match and caused certain problems to Terry. De Rossi was very good. Montelivo is a great player and will be a best option in midfield when Pirlo will hang his boots. The rest of the team worked well.
- On England's side, Gerrard was underform and that showed during the whole match. Perhaps, the main reason why England couldn't create chances in second-half. Rooney was extremely average in certain situations but there were certain actions where he showed his class; notably 2 chances. Both player - so crucial to their team spirit - scored during the PKs. And that's good cause England media will have bury them otherwise.
- I talked about how GKs learn a lot and do lots of homework for PKs. We had tow opposing styles of GK today. Hart - who was still gaining information before shootouts and Buffon who is old-school and go by instinct during those tense moments. Buffon won it since he stopped Cole's shot - though it was mostly ill-shot by Cole. But that was some clash of styles. Wasn't that passionating as they didn't stopped much but we can say that veterans thumped the youth.
- Young was disastrous offensively but he did extremely well defensively. He neutralized Abate completely. Damn that he sot onto the bar during the PKs. The 4 defenders and Joe Hart did a great match. The rest worked defensively while Walcott didn't made the impact I was hoping for when he entered.
- I'm disappointed for England but not much cause supporting England was always hope without optimism in my case. Just glad they fought till the end and didn't go out with a 4-0 trashing or didn't crash out in group stages itself. They showed the British spirit to always believe though it didn't favor them this time.
- Both Semis will be great though and very promising. The 4 best players in this Euro right now IMO - Iniesta, Pirlo, CR7 and Schweinsteiger - and they'll get the opportunity to end up as Best Player of this Euro.
I never have trust in left-footed players on Penalties. It's 90% miss in most matches I see. U_UTime to win on Penalties. The elder scrolls have foretold this.
