I will ignore the political undertones and focus on the societal implications of your thread title. There is a balance between individuality and a society's needs. This is found in the concept of one person's rights ending where another's begins and is supported by a country's laws, taxation system, and the values of the majority of the citizens.
Because Americans are individuals first and Americans second, the concept of knowing your true self is more important than following a path planned out by society. Americans can change their individual destinies and theoretically can change the destiny of their country. That's why we think it's important.

Well think about it like this.

I decided a while back that i was fine and perfect. I found a guy and we were in love. and then slowly I started to change. I began to get tardy, change my diet, and my life began to change alot over one year. I was in a poor relationship because I simply wanted attention. he was giving it to me and so I didnt care what else was happening.

But then once we broke up, and I was shattered, I decicded that I wanted to "find myself" and who I truely was. More to that fact of doing things that I wanted, doing them when I wanted and not trying to please other people or change for them. Ofcourse I was still being there for friends but I mean I wasnt goint out of my way in destructive habits to change myself for them. Eventualy I found a guy that liked me for me and so thats what made me happy. i didnt care what randoms though, only what friends thought. so thats just my story of why I wanted to change myself and find myself.

Dont you think that basing your career on your own likes and dislikes is somewhat irrelevant. I mean come on if you have a skill that your good at then that should be the skill you should offer other people. It doesnt matter if you like it or not because at the end of the day whatever career you choose youre eventually gonna hate it.
No, because the job of an American Citizen isn't to achieve good for the society but good for one's self. The pursuit of happiness entails concern only for a person's well being, where other's well being is second. This promotes the most happiness, which in turn provides the best life quality for a citizen under the United State's social contracts.

As far as jobs, this is false, various personal testimonies have stated that if a job is pleasurable enough in the employees or employers opinion, then they can work the job until they are unable to.
