63% of college grads DO NOT find jobs in their field of study!!! and that NOT including english, psych, foreign study, etc majors. EVERYBODY is going to school for the same things.... you really think they have 9827349283 job openings for doctors or lawyers?? go back to 4th 5th grade when you learned about supply and demand!!!! there is PLENTY supply of college educated graduates who want to work in an office pushing papers and such but the demand is for trade laborers!!!! look into it!!! the statistics are ALL over the internet!!!

The fact that your questioning social norms is proof that your thinking on a higher level than others who follow without question. Dont let yourself be fooled by all this hype that college gives you opportunities and youll have a btter life. If you feel that theres a better path for you right now then take it. College is the gateway to many opportunities. Don't wimp out just because it costs money, everything costs money. Most jobs require college degrees anyway so to start a healthy career you should probably go to college. You're right in saying that there are many ways to go about starting a career, but get in the mind-set of the employer: Who do you think they'll hire? The one who learned chemical engineering from his uncle, or the one who went to college for it and has his degree. Go to college.

EDIT: It also depends what you want to do. Sure not everything requires you to go to college but it's not a bad idea at all -- you learn a lot and get formal training in said career. In the end, it all comes down to what you want to be.

Go to college. You're an idiot if you have the opportunity and don't. If you dont want to your next best bet would be the army. But oh wait I'm in the army and my 1st Sgt requires us to be enrolled in two college courses covered by tuition assistance. Just go. You dont have to do it to be successful but it gives you more opportunities. I know a few guys who didn't go and got hooked up with good jobs through family connections. God help them if they ever lose that job though. I know a guy went to tech school and makes mad cash as a deisel mechanic for giant dump trucks and bulldozers and stuff like that. They are the exception though not the rule.

Well, I'm not really going to college next so I wouldn't know. I'm heading off to uni. and my program does have work experience so yeah. What career are you looking into atm?

To be honest I don't know I just want a stable job and study everything this world has to offer in science, math, politics, philosophy, literature, engineering, and some other things but it would take way to long to go to college for all of these.

Why does the media insist that attending college is essential to being successful in life. Plenty of people without college degrees have been successful. Is college a scam? And how would anyone possibly know that you in particularly will be more successful in life with a college degree than without one?

Some professions require you to go to college such as engineering, doctor, etc..
There are other viable options for you if you feel college isn't the right place for you such as apprenticeships where they take you to workplace and basically pay you while they teach you about the job. So overall, yes college is important depending on what kind of career you wanna end up in. for some careers its not a 100% necessary

My sister already goes to MIT. I really don't want to put any more of a burden on my parents.

Thats just something you have to do. You cant expect to learn all those things in a year

Both my parents never went to college and they have made up to a million dollars per year in construction. There are vocational colleges and technical schools to pretty much give you hands on or just give training in what you would specifically like to do. I am 22 and have not gone to college yet. I MIGHT. Instead, i got a job.

First of course it was at a fast food place for less than a year, then i received a job at Ford delivering parts. Now this job only paid 11 dollars an hour. It was enough for ME to get by and save money still but i was not living like a king.

College to me does feel like a double edged sword. I hate school work which is why i did not go. Going to college guarantees nothing. I have highschool friends that have gone to college that either sucked at it and received terrible grades or graduated with bachelors and are working at fast food places. I make more money than them at the moment.

This does not mean they wont find a better job later though that they can use their degree as a way to get in over someone else though. That is what college is good for. It just shows that you spent the time in college to get ahead in life i guess. Though it is possible you go there and do well but still end up wasting your time. thats years of time wasted and you still can't find a job.

It is even more so the case now that the economy is sht. People that already have the jobs are holding on to them as long as they can because they know there is nothing else. Since that is happening, and with booming population, jobs are not available for recent graduates, unless you are lucky and know people and get in with them.

I am both happy and regretful that i did not go to college. Happy because i did not waste my time in case i could not find a better job after spending years there for nothing. Oh and happy since i found a good job for no degree. Im also regretful because if i did go, i could have gone with my classmates to make it easier and also there is still a chance i could have gotten an ok job after college.

I regret going to college.... It was such a HUGE waste of time and money!!!! Not all of us have parents who can drop a quarter million on tuition. I had to pay my way through 5 different schools and realized how stupid it was. Knowing what jobs are available in the real world and getting training/education off that is by far the SMARTEST WAY TO SUCCEED in this world.

Well no one said it will be easy. Those jobs you included make around $50K-70k, so it will require a long to time to get there. From your list, engineering/sciences/math stood out the most and if you want to go into any of those fields you have a lot of possibilities, especially engineering IMO. Just do whatever you like.

I'm not sure where you live exactly but where I live college is deemed as low tier education and university as the highest. IMO, college is technically better cause you have a higher chance of getting a job after you graduate cause of the amount of work experience you gain from there.
