Why does the media insist that attending college is essential to being successful in life. Plenty of people without college degrees have been successful. Is college a scam? And how would anyone possibly know that you in particularly will be more successful in life with a college degree than without one?

The "I don't need college, guys like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg dropped out and they're filthy rich" excuse is the most pathetic thing I see some people do. Do you have some million Dollar idea right now, which guarantee's you a safe future ? No ? Then go to school. Education is essential to do well in life, the amount and type of education just varies between people.

Well, certain higher-paying jobs require college/university degrees.

Going to college doesn't mean you'll be successful in life, it just means you'll have more opportunities to make better money than the average Joe, I guess.

Well I do think college is important but not for what they have to teach you. I have a bachelors in general psychology and I have yet to use the degree. College teaches you to sacrifice for the bigger picture. In college you don't have to show up to school, the teachers don't care if you pass. It is solely up to you to sacrifice your self to get the good grades. Odds are 90 percent of what you learned you will forget but when you get out and your ready to start your life you will have the personal tools neccisary to get what you are after. Does that make any sense to you? So my advise is go to college, apply yourself to achieve your goals and if you can do that I'm willing to place money that no matter what you do in life you will be successful at it.

Yes I think college is important for kinda the same reasons as above. Myself, for instance, I wanna be a psychiatrist but than wont happen unless I get a number of degrees. I cant just apply for it. Just because you have a certain amount of degrees no that wont make you happy. Doing what you love to do will make you happy. If you love to do something and you can do it without a college education than more power to you. Life, in my opinion, isnt about who is the richest or the poorest. I just think its about finding what makes you happy in life and striving to do that. Psychology makes me happy so I am going to do that probably for the rest of my life.

This is what the media and teachers try to convince all students, this ideology is absurd.

Don't listen to these people. Get certifications and do a lot of internships and shadow people to learn what you want to do. Most, if not all companies will take people that have experience over the person that's coming out of college with a degree. Plus, most colleges start at a minimum of $10,000. If you have that money then cool but if you don't then you're looking at taking out loans which cost you more than you take out. College is a waste of time, unless you want to fraternize and make friends, which you can do outside of college anyway.

I'm starting to think education isn't necessarily about learning it seems more about turning students into obedient, submissive, conformist.

its a bout doing the job you love and life satisfaction, personal growth, ...

you should go to college, its not a scam, its one of the most rewarding things yoou can do in life, also it was the best time of my life thats why i sayed and got a job here

the ones you mean by saying success without collage are very very few who happened to have the right ideas, it almost never happens
