The games have changed quite a bit from what they were in red and blue. You actually have to look into the game to really realize this though.

Not sure if you've looked into this but there are pokemon that can play different roles based off of its nature, and the way you train it.

I could go really into depth about this but it'd just be easier if you looked into EV/IV training. :]

Lol, well give me your opinion on him once you've beat the game? : D If you're playing pokemon competitively it's really hard not to be terrible at the game. x__x Its 100% mind games and stylistic play, and thats what I enjoy about it. : DDD

As far as the nostalgia, it comes from playing the older pokemon games as a kid. ^^; I still have the same sort of enjoyment of playing pokemon now as I did then and thats kind of awesome, least I think so. I still hate caves with a passion. .___.;
I take so long to beat games...I've just beat the third gym, I AM THAT SLOW. DX I wish I had more time.
Castelia City is so cool <3
I always assumed everyone hated caves, because...what's there to like about them? So far, I've only encountered one cave and it wasn't so bad but I'm assuming they get worse later in the game.

I love the new Unova pokemon so much >< I think I've mentioned this before, but I can't help it! They're cute!

Alright, I have quite some things to say about this new game after skimming through your conversations above.
I got to admit I was extremely impressed by the improvement of the graphics and how the battle moves are much more explicit and interesting than before. Also, the Pokemon constantly move in the battle, which also makes it seem more realistic. (I'm hoping they add more aspects to this, such as facial expressions or more bodily motions. But I guess what they have right now is much more better than I'll ever expect on DS graphics, and I'm grateful enough.)
I have to admit though, while the storyline is excellent with a bit of weird concepts and twist (I mean, taking Pokemon away from trainers, yet you're using them yourself? Honestly? A bit weird, but unique), however, the originality kind of fails, and along with this, comes some fail naming.
I mean, Krookodile? I don't even know how to pronounce that. And Vanilluxe? Serperior? I almost found myself wincing at the sheer lameness of those names. Good thing the legendaries don't let you down.
The Elite Four layout was pretty decent and interesting, I have to admit.

As for characters in general.
Quite obviously, you can see I've taking a bit of liking for Cheren, and no, not because of looks, but because of his deep character arc in the story. Yes, my favorite thing about most games is definitely the story line (not to mention the music...still listening to Victini's battle theme, Team Plasma's and N's...all as epic as the other), and seldom anything else. I simply don't understand why everyone is cooing over N...just because he looks cool? Rather shallow, if you ask me. I don't want to go on...but the fact that personal connections are now rather unappreciated as a part of literature.

As for the game, I finished it in less two days, yes, with all-nighters, just because it was epic like that. Great graphics, excellent storyline, a bit of fail with originality...
Kind of don't know what to do after beating the game, quite frankly speaking.

I like to take my time we video games. Rather than rush through it, I tend to just play sections of the game, enjoy the music and look at the scenery. I agree though, the names in the game are just awful.

One thing I love is how I already have my full team ready by the time I got to my third gym badge. Sure most of them are still in their first or second stages, but I have the final picture in my mind already. My biggest upset, though, is how there isn't really an electric that really catches my eye aside from Blitzle and Eelektross - two which are going to be commonly played.

Well, I don't know what to build for my team...I'm rather **** about natures and IVs/EVs...as far as I'm concerned, there really isn't any good teams to build right now.
Zebstrika reminds me of Manectric, and slightly Gengar, having good speed and special attack/attack, but bad defense on both sides.
Chandelure is the same cause though I got to admit its Special Attack is actually pretty decent.
The birds kind of suck, unless you got Braviary (I have Black, so I don't have that Pokemon in the game), and seriously, Pidove, Tranquill, and Unfezant? Lame name. They look lame too.
I wouldn't use an electric from that game...I trained a Zebstrika to around level 50 for the Elite Four and N and such, but I dropped it after I beat the game. Thunder Wave was decently useful.
And seriously? The monkeys just plain SUCK.

I really don't know what's good...Deino's third evolution, Hydriegon or something, was actually quite decent. The other weird rocky-looking dragon kind of fails.
I don't know the difference between Throh and Sawk, quite frankly speaking.
The physics are decent...Musharna is a tank. Gothia or something's third evolution looks like Lady Gaga, and the other one, Meniculus, looks like a fetus.
I beat the entire game with the team of Reshiram (I regret the random EV points), Zebstrika, Chandelure, the fire monkey, Krookodile, and Samurott. Decently balanced, plus me printing out the entire Elite Four information from Serebii. Fighting types were a bit tough for me with this team.
I really don't know a good team with just Generation Five Pokemon. They all kind of fail for me...

I bet the Elite 4 with my lvl 64 Samurott u.u it's basically the only Pokemon i use apart from Reshiram.

Gothic. xD Serperior. Tranquill and Pidove?
Lame. Oh, and Klink Klang thingy. xD
Oh god, those Kilinklang things look like a shit rip off of Magneton Etc. xD the only decent pokemon (1st stage evolution) are Oshawott, Miccinco (Or is Ciccinco the 1st stage?) and Axew xD

LOL! "SHIT RIP-OFF!"
Never caught a Miccino.
Ever tried Lady Gaga and Fetus?
And oh God, that freakin' coffin thing. Audino reminds me of like Blissey and those normal type tanks.

I watched an episode of the Black & White anime. Audino is Nurse Joy's assistant in Unova :L

My team atm consists of Reshiram, Samurott, Golduck and Pupitar (close to being Tyranitar) hopefully gonna get me a Ninetales soon xD

I don't think this one was the best, but I don't really like the new generation of Pokemon. Story-wise, I loved it! Way better than diamond/pearl! Your two friends were all right. I like Cheren but Bianna or whatever annoyed me to death. Maybe it was the way she took out her pokeball or maybe it was how just looking at her, I coud sense her annoyingness, I will never know. Anyways, I just beat the game with:
Captain Lou (Samurott) Lv. 50
Izzy (Charizard) Lv. 52
Thron (Ferrothorn) Lv. 50
Zoroark Lv. 46
Deino Lv. 47
Galvantula Lv. 49

Izzy dominated the entire elite four with Captain Lou as back up. As a warning, the last boss (N's dad?) was extremely hard. And by hard, I mean spammy. Make sure your first one is steel or is holding an anti-posion berry because his first pokemon uses toxic then spams protect.

Your Samurott would've beaten him easy. Teach it X-Cutter (bug type move) and Dragon Tail and the only thing that you need to look out for are electric pokemon.

Ghetsis was slightly annoying - the only Pokemon I hated out of his entire team with Hydriegon...that three-headed dark dragon.
Where did you even get that Charizard?
Nice names. I named:
Despair - Samurott.
Kanashimi - Krookodile.
Hiro - Chandelure.
Zebstrika - Blitzkrieg.
Sakuragi - Deino.
The monkey remained monkey.

I didn't want poor Captain Lou to get posioned D: I just send my Ferrothorn to get the job done. Oh gawd I hated that Hydriegon! I sent out a pokemon then when it died I had Captain Lou use retalite and surf combo to wipe it out. Took me a few tries though =_=""

Charizard was a transfer from my SoulSilver game. My friend beat the game in two days so I had her send it over. Probably gonna breed some charmanders and get me a squirturtle!

Sweet names bro, are they the japanese ones?

I don't think you can build a competitive 5th gen team tbh. As far as gen5 OU metagame, I've seen a lot of these pokemon;

Serperior
Excadrill
Seismitoad
Leavanny
Scraggy
Zoroark
Reuniclus
Jellicent
Galvantula
Ferrothorn
Electross
Chandelure
Haxorus
Accelgor
Stunfisk
Hydreigon
Kyurem [might be uber]

As far as the other things brought up;
Throh and Sawk, Sawk is 100% Spd fighting, where Throh is meant to endure the attack then deal massive amounts back, in competitive play or even the higher tier of the ingame, Sawk is the better choice since you can just get him to sweep the other team.

I too am not a fan of the bird pokemon in this game, then again I never was so doesn't affect me as much. xD;

Zebstrika isn't worth waiting to level 31 or w.e for, so i didn't use it much.

Musharna is a tank indeed, this + Calm mind and Baton Pass can be really good for sweeping, on simulators I don't think my Musharna has been killed before being able to baton pass one calm mind.

Most of the pokemon are pretty self explanatory on why they'd be used in competitive play. :p If you want to know though feel free to ask. ^__^
