Me and my roommate were recently discussing how basically everyone is a speck of dust in history, but there are those whose names will never be forgotten, no matter how much time or however many holocausts may occur.

Note that the list below could be people that may or may have not existed, but we still know their names.

These were the names we came up with that we believe are famous enough that just about everyone will eventually hear about in their life.

Imagine a hypothetical situation where all digital records are lost, written documents are burned, nuclear holocaust, etc. Which names will be most prominent and remembered from memory alone?

1. Jesus

2. Julius Ceasar

3. Genghis Khan

4. Shakespeare

5. Muhammad

6. Da Vinci

7. Beethoven

8. Mozart

9. Hercules

10. Buddha

Alexander the Great

Michelangelo

Aristotle

Socrates

Plato

Hitler

George Washington

Einstein

Charles Darwin

Yeah I agree, I'd add like Queen Elizabeth and Joan of Arc though. Maybe King Arthur.

I stated that it didn't have to be real people. Everyone know about Hercules. He could have existed as a mortal man who became famous and had legends stir up around him, like King Arthur.

List is extremely unorganized imo.

It's hard to organize an opinionated list. This is just what I perceive as the correct order.

To be honest there are a lot of people whose name will always be remembered. I don't see how you and your friend came up with that "spec of dust" thing. That would only apply to non-famous people

Especially if you're adding fictional people

Haha such an inaccurate list IMO.

In many parts of the world they might not even know some of the people on your list. It all relies on cultural context. Depending on the culture, the list changes.

You never know. We might think that in our century, but in 2000 years, will people remember him? Emperor Caligula was considered to be the most sadistic Roman Emperor in history, yet the common man doesn't know about him.

Alexander the Great one of the greatest military leaders of all time.

Hitler being the direct cause of the sudden rise of Germany after ww1 and the enabler of one of the worlds largest ethnic genocides.

Yes, I know, which is why I put "imo".

The things that bother me the most are the ones such as Hercules, da vinci and Mozart being above Einstein, hitler, Alexander the great, Socrates and Darwin.

Charles Darwin is considered one of the fathers of modern evolution. A series of scientific postulates that make the strongest global case that contrasts and contradicts the studies of the majority of major religion.

We argued the possibility of records being erased.

We only believe in our life that our records will last forever on digital hardware. But what if there's a nuclear holocaust where we don't have access to computers and many written documents burn?

I'm not just talking about 100 years in the future, but thousands of years until the end of human existence.

The top 10 list is what I believe to be the names that will always be remembered, even if such a thing would happen.
