Doesnt matter. You're going through old portrayals, go through just jutsu abilities here. Not he shat his pants or kid shat his pants logic. Onoki fires laser beams in hashi's shinsuu senju head since he could fire a beam so long to hit turtle island from up the sky, then hashi's statue would be useless, he has to create it again. It's also pretty close range. Onoki keeps his distance then shoots beams atomising buddha statue.

And even then, Dust Release might have just blasted a clean hole through Turtle Island, considering it lacks the shattering impact that might induce structural instability.​

If he was going to just pierce through or shatter it a bit, akatsuchi wouldve said 'you'll accidently kill it' or 'you'll damage the turtle surface'. Something like that. If someone destroys a quarter of a city, would you say he destroyed the city or he damaged the city? Keep in mind this was the conical version. Its different from the cubical one. Turtle Islands sentience is not common knowledge, as even evidenced by the very point you called out, Akatsuchi's choice of words being "destroy" rather than "kill". Not only that, but fodder characters are known to over-hype techniques and make false or ill-estimated statements. Also, I must add once more that Dust Release disintegrates any object that in come into contact with at a molecular level. It lacks the blunt shattering force that would induce structural instability.​
