That is pretty much what happens every time Luffy faces off against a guy who is stronger than him, he surpasses them by fighting them and getting stronger.

Besides if he doesn't surpass Doflamingo then he doesn't have a prayer against Kaidou and he is only two or three arcs away, and Kaidou makes Doflamingo pee himself.

But still even surpassing Doflamingo isn't enough, Luffy is going to need to work those rubber muscles before he gets to Kaidou or his time in the New World is going to be short.

Gear 4 is very likely one wild upgrade.

Seems like oda is rushing things, very unlike him. He usually shows the whole crew along with everybody involved in the arc and their upcoming fates before Luffy engages in main battle. However we don't know about Sanji half, and the rest are done fighting just now. And then the gear fourth is pretty early. I'd have wanted it to be long away but its Doflamingo afterall.
