Limbo. He used Limbo pre-Juubi Jin on the Bijuus and we seen all of Madara's Rinnegan jutsus from Nagato who mastered the Rinnegan well. I think he had Limbo in both eyes like how Shisui had KA in both of his MS. This also explains why Nagato and Obito couldn't use it, neither one could access Madara's MS/EMS jutsus at all or we would be seeing Susanoo from Nagato. This is before becoming the Juubi Jin so it's no powered up Rinnegan powers either. It's not confirmed or anything so this is speculations but more things points to this being true than false.

I don't think it was limbo, but more like a weaker variation of it. Seeing as how 1 eye Rinnegan Madara was only able to use one Limbo clone at a time.

Wrong, if Madara's MS ability was Limbo he would've killed Hashirama at VOTE, and Madara used Limbo also with 1 Rinnegan eye.

- Madara states that he will show Zetsu the full power of the Rinnegan and uses Limbo
- Limbo can only seen or sensed by the ones who have Hagoromo's chakra, and Rinnegan is a product of Hagoromo's chakra
- When he obtained another Rinnegan, Limbo clones multiplied
It would honestly make no sense if it was a EMS ability, why else he never used before obtaining his real Rinnegans?

Nagato wasn't able to fulfill the prerequisite's of using Rinnegan to it's full extent; the dōryoku require strong yīn energy, that can be only found from the Uchiha, while the opposite that is the Senju and Uzumaki only wield the strong yáng energy
