Databook lists the affinities which those characters are capable of mastering, not ones that they use. Kakashi and Yamato already explained that each person is born with one main affinity, and has the capability to master several more. The affinities Kakashi has mastered enough to be able to use jutsu with are lightning, water, and earth.

Tsunade was listed as being able to use every element as well, does that mean she can use Yomi Numa after seeing the hand seals for it once? Lol, obviously not.

Theoretically, using this logic, shouldn't EVERY shinobi be able to learn every element(assuming they don't have issues with using chakra, like Lee)?

If the 4th databook is using that method for usable elements, they made a very stupid mistake.

That makes absolutely no sense. Especially when you consider him telling Naruto to go to Asuma for Futon training and Yamato's statement of "no wonder he's having trouble with Kakuzu if he's capable of using all 5 elements". Which that statement doesn't make a ton of sense anyway considering not even Kakuzu showed the ability to use all 5 during their fight, but whatever I guess.
I think he asked Naruto to look for Asuma because futon is his natural elementar affinity(when his own is raiton). Naruto was questioning about who exactly has a futon elemental affinity like him in the village. Kakashi can manipulate futon, but it's not his affinity. Also, Yamato didn't only imply that iirc. Kakashi also said the guy had 5 hearts(so they had to kill him 5times), and it's along with the affinities that Yamato understood the problem

Either way, here is his chart

I made a thread about that a while ago. You can probably still find it. The elements listed in the DB are the ones the Shinboi should be able to perform and have the capacity to learn through their experience they've had.

No, it differs with each person. Kakashi just so happens to be capable of mastering every element. It honestly annoyed me a lot how Kishi was basically just handing out elements in DB4 to characters who never showed those elements.

But does it really matter in Kakashi's case? If he is capable to master the affinity, it means that all what he needs is knowledge, something Sharingan directly gives him by identifying the working of opponents' attacks

Hand seals aren't all there is to a jutsu. He is capable of mastering that element, but he hasn't mastered it yet to the point where he can use jutsu with it. It's not like he will be able to master a jutsu of an element he's never used before after seeing the hand seals for it one time.

Kakashi having the ability to master each element makes sense enough given he is a prodigy, and without his sharingan he would have to turn to a more broad use of ninjutsu(becoming a Hiruzen-lite, I guess), but just handing that ability out willy-nilly to random people is just dumb. Tsunade doesn't even use elemental ninjutsu in her fighting style, I dunno why he would even need to give her that.

Whatever, I guess. Not like Kishi has been making logical decisions in his writing in the past...300-ish chapters anyway.

Databóok Sharingan

The Kekkei Genkai withheld in the blood of Konoha's finest lineage, the Uchiha clan. This unique ability, manifested only in a mere fraction [of people] even within the clan, is characterized by comma*-shaped markings in one's pupils. On top of an all-encompassing insight and powerful hypnosis, these eyes are hosts to a jutsu-copying ability that memorizes the techniques their gaze falls upon in an instant, and replicates them. Just like Kakashi who, in his fight against Zabuza, used it in such a way as to look like he could predict the future; according to their methods of use, the field of variations the caster can apply to their offense and defense expands indefinitely!!

The Sharingan's true power, in addition to the threat posed by its insight... is its copying ability, that of making one's own any technique one sets eyes upon. Chakra, handseals... all the principles bringing the jutsu into existence will be recorded into the caster's memory in the blink of an eye, making its utilization possible. Of course, the necessary volume of chakra and physical ability requirements must be met, but should one find themselves in some kind of dire situation, the Uchiha blood will demonstrate its accumulated experience, and never will those who have inherited it know any limits (tn: i.e even if you can't use the jutsu you've copied, the info will still prove most useful provided you can rub two brain cells together)!!

Whether he has used it before or not, Sharingan automatically memorizes the workings of techniques instantly, so Kakashi will have the necessary knowledge to perform the techniques as long as he possess the elemental transformation required to perform the jutsu as well as the necessary chakra reserve(hidden techniques/kekkei genkai aside)

Irrelevant since Kakashi can't use techniques based on elements he hasn't mastered.

We all know that ain't true.

Nope. Lee doesn't have any listed elements.

T Bogard is right.

Ino got the entire sa to use earth wall despite not everyone in the sa having earth affinity or earth mastery, simply by telling them the handseals.

Jiraiya has the advantage here with summons. Scenario 2 is a stomp, especially w/o Kamui for Kakashi.

Edit: Read that wrong. Scenario 1 would be a stomp if Jiraiya is able to get into Sage Mode.

tsunade was not listed with all elements.

And the databook doesn't list the affinities one is capable of mastering. It lists all the ones that they can use. There's a difference between being a master in all 5, compared to having mastered 2-3, and having a couple d rank jutsu for the others (basically useless jutsu).

As we saw in the war arc, everyone was capable of learning that rubbish earth wall jutsu, just by knowing the hand signs. But it was essentially an incredibly weak wall jutsu. Very useless in pretty much any battle, as it would probably only shield from low level water techs.

Jiraya even taught Nagato and Yahiko low ranked Wind and Water techniques. I remeber one being the wind style gale palm and the other was the Water style raging waves (I think). Yet jiraya has never used these himself. Doesn't mean he can't obviously he can since he taught them. But when you have better more useful jutsu, then it's pointless.

You don't need to see someone perform a certain element to believe they can use it. I'm sure when Kakashi sent Naruto to asuma for wind training, its not because kakashi didn't know any. It's because Asuma has a natural affinity for wind, while kakashi is natural for lightning. And kakashi probably isn't as good as asuma, and wouldn't be able to teach naruto properly.

How does it even make sense what you're saying. Why would the DB list a ninjas potential elements, if they didn't know them?? How can someone know a potential element if they don't have the techniqies? Its not possible, one can only know what their affinity. You have to learn other elements yourself. So the DB has to have listed what other shinobi have learned and how many elements they know how to use.

Where was this said? Any shinobi can master any element, time and talent are the only issues, which is why so few have mastered them. If the Databook lists all the elements for Kakashi, it means that he can use all those elements. The only reason he has all the elements but has only displayed some of them, is because he doesn't have to use jutsu that make use of all 5 elements.

If Databook listed what you said it listed, then we'd have every shinobi with every element listed.

So theoretically, if Kakashi sees any jutsu that uses one of the five nature transformations, he should be able to copy and use it.

Exactly what I just tried to explain, otherwise the db would list everyone who can use ninjutsu, as potential users of learning every element.

Hence why only old experienced ninja and sharingan users (who can copy jutsu), have all 5 (or 7 if we count Yin and Yang).

Orochimaru, Hiruzen, Tobirama, Kakashi, Obito, Hashirama, Madara - All are either old (had the time to study and learn them), or possess the sharingan. You also need the talent/skill as well of course.

By the way, I think it depends on the rank of the jutsu. I don't think kakashi can just copy and use any element straight away. Does he not still have to practice/learn..? Although now that I think about it, he did say he copied rasengan, and that's a high level technique. So should be no problem, since I don't think there are any S rank elemental jutsu.

This spoiler is incomplete translation of this page that lets us understand the chart in the spoiler a bit. Its incomplete as you see and 1-3 and 6 are missing but these are the translations. The shinobi are rewarded natures based on their experience and this chart shows what natures they could potentially handle, not the natures they actually have.

Shinobi Section - How to read-chart (p. 14)
※The introduced character data in this book goes up to chapter #691 (10th October)

[4] Possession: Nature Transformation

The nature transformations that shinobi can handle are shown. With the appended "Fire", "Wind", "Water", "Earth" and "Lightning" as well as "Yin" and "Yang", seven natures exist.

※Possession: Nature Transformation makes a guess according to that shinobi's battle experience so far, also eye powers change the current stats.

[5] Characteristics

The special characteristics this character possesses. There are "Jinchuriki", "Senjutsu", "Kekkei Genkai", "Kekkei Tota", "Kekkei Mora", "Hiden" and "Kuchiyose", character with multiple special characteristics exist, too.

[7] Events of the past

Past incidents and emerging desires, bringing about a big influence on the the growth of those [people], read these events carefully. (Or so)

Obviously Tsunade can't master chidori after seeing the hand seals for it once despite her having a lightning chakra nature in the databook. Sasuke took weeks of training to master the fireball jutsu even though that was one of his natural element affinities (kid Sasuke I know, but regardless) so it's not like Kakashi can copy any jutsu, especially ones of elements he doesn't have experience with, on his first try.

Ok, you have a point. But your Tsunade point is obviously flawed. Having a chakra nature=/=Being able to use any jutsu of that nature, for ordinary shinobi. Having Sharingan makes that null and void, something Tsunade doesn't have. Your Kid Sasuke example only holds up if the jutsu is complicated for him to master, like it was for Sasuke at the time, which won't be the case.

I'll agree that jutsu not of his used natures can't be copied, but anything else is fair game.

Sasuke's affinity is lightning not fire. He took the same paper test naruto took and the paper crumpled, instead of catching fire. That's why he took so long to get it down. Not to mention he didn't have sharingan.

Kakashi is listed in having all to potentially handle but due to sharingan he dosen't have to worry about it since it gives him the ability to copy regardless.

Uh when did Sasuke take the paper test? Pretty sure he has two natural affinities, like how water and earth are both natural affinities for Yamato.

Jiraiya wins. He will just threaten to stop writing Icha Icha And Kakashi will bow at his feet.
