Shikamaru wasn't quite right anyway, Tobirama came out of the battle alive, and it was the Second Raikage that didn't. Bare with me, because I wanna check the raw for this chapter to make sure it wasn't mistranslated.

Yeah but Oro and Obito(with the kyuubi) ambushed the Kage's and both Oro and Tobi are miles ahead of Kinkaku/Ginkaku which would justify Hiruzen and Minato dying. But if the 2nd was as powerful as Hiruzen, then even if they ambushed him(not he also had the 2nd raikage to help) then they would have still defeated them.

The details of surprise attack are completly unknown. On top of that the 3rd and 4th hokages weren't surprised directly one on one persay. The village was surprised attacked. And tobi didn't attack minato he just held naruto ransom

Of course he was powerful you can't be leader of a village if you're fking weak and plus didn't he create S/T ninjutsu? And he was so skilled with water techniques he could use them without any water around, the dude could pull water out of the freaking air if that doesn't make some one powerful then idk what does. And another thing when he was about to die by only placing two fingers on the ground he was able to tell how many enemies were there, all of their locations, AND which village they were from. Trolling. Kinkaku and Ginkaku weren't weak anyway, they had all of RS tools + Kyuubi chakra. To be able to kill one Kage and strip down another, they were two strong shinobi. And they weren't twenty fodder, they were master bounty hunters from Kumogakure.

Oh, the scanlation you found was a bit sketchy. I can't exactly word it but 'defeat' certainly isn't the best translation, 'nearly overcame' would be better.

Tobirama fought Gin and Kin and about 18-20 other skilled shinobi that were apart of an elite group. He took all of them on so that Hiruzen and the others could survive. Darui had 100s of shinobi helping him. Remember the earth and water style ninja helped him plus his 2 comrads and others.

the thing people fail to see is that the gold and silver brothers are two strong persons.
tobirama wasn't killed during their battle and he wasn't sealed either ( which makes tobirama pretty good because kin/gin were specialized in sealing people )
if he was weak he wouldn't we a hokage.
it was stated ( I don't know where and by who ) that he was able to stop madara's fire style with his water techs.
he could do water techs with no water in the area instead he got his water out of the air , which kisame couldn't do ( kisame had special justsu to spit out water and people consider him the strongest water tech user.
tobirama could use water techs with less hand seals than a normal person had to do.
he could use space/time ninjutsu ( we don't know anything about his space/time ninjutsu but if you think about it everyone with space/time ninjutsu is weak \sarcasm/ )
he learned minato space/time ninjutsu ( is stated somewhere in the manga )
he made the most brutal forbidden tech ( impure world resurection aka : edo tensei ) even if it wasn't complete he created it , if it wasn't created it orochimaru couldn't have upgraded tobirama's version and the fourth ninja world war wouldn't have been much of a big deal since edo tensei is the most important jutsu used during the war.

so yeah, Tobirama was strong, i can say he is even stronger than minato and the 3 legendary sannin!
