To a truly redeemed person, living with the burden of their past sins would be much more painful than death.

That's why they're redeemed in death because only death can take away that pain. When a man takes the lives of countless individuals, how does one make up for that?

Only by giving his own life helping people for the rest of his days can he atone.

If he dies without helping people, he is not atoned.

If he spends the rest of his days helping people, then he will die knowing that he tried to do what he could to make up for his past actions.

I don't think helping people for only a year is enough to make up for genocide. That's something you'll have to make up for the rest of your days.
