Kakuzu didn't win that fight. It was a drawn-out battle. He was bragging that he went toe-to-toe with Hashirama, not defeating him. That in itself was an impressive feat during their time. Hashirama won, considering Kakuzu didn't manage to kill him, take his heart and add it to his collection.
Was he the strongest of his time? Yes I don't doubt that but there were people capable of killing him obviously because he's died in the war. The gap between his power and the other kages were not so huge that they were fodders. He heals from all attacks so there are only two plausible explanations is he got erased with First Tsuchikages Jinton or his head was blitzd off by First Raikage Lariat.

Masashi did think it out.Naruto and Sasuke were compared to Hashirama and Madara by Kakashi at the end of their fight.Zetsu was said to watxh over all of Indra and Ashura's riencarnations,and who do we see at the end of Naruto Vs Sasukr in part 1?
Who did we see watching Sasuke Vs Itachi,Naruto Vs Pain,and Sasuke after the Danzo fight?

Naruto and Sasuke are two rivals who fought each other and were compared to Hashirama and Madara - two rivals who fought each other who are riencarnations of Ashura and Indra who are two rivals who fought other.
Zetsu was shown watching their battles - watching over the reincarnations which he was said to do.Naruto Vs Sasuke happened 10 years ago in the manga and Zetsu was there watching and Kakashi noted their similarities to Madara and Hashirama.
Cioncidence? Yeah,he had it planned.

Maybe Black Zetsu assassinated him. Idk why he would though...maybe he knew that Tobirama would be much more harsh in his handling of the Uchiha as Hokage than Hashirama was.

Sage mode was and is god mode for all of them (im not counting these rikodou power ups juubi jin etc).No one said were or how he died,he and madara together could eleminate entire shinobi world if they felt like it,maybe aliens obducted him to train them,who knows
I'm just working with what Kishi gave us here man. We know what Hashirama was capable of and we know he died in the First War so someone killed him, therefore claiming all shinobi in that period to be utter fodders to him is just absurd.

2. All first kages ganged up on Him.
3. All First Hosts ganged up on him
4. 2nd + 3nd option
5. He was in weak state after fight with Madara. Maybe Black Zetsu poisoned him in his sleep lol.

Base hashirama soloed perfect susano with no use of saqe mode and your fodder gokage were soloed by perfect susano with out even denting it
