*I await the student in a simple place, that I have set up for Katon training; it's night time in the middle of an open field: a large fire roars in a pit, with various beds of coals scattered around the area, giving off red glows.*

No, I am lead to believe that you have no experience with Katon, which means we need to start at the very beginning.

My first question is very simple.

What do you think of Fire?

Hrm...Very well.

Now, where does fire stand in relation to Shinobi and the Elemental Circle?
Well, to shinobi, fire is a destructive and powerful element. It can take on large groups of enemies or be used to ecape by blinding them. In relation to the elemental circle, it is strong against wind attacks because wind empowers the fire and it's weak against water. By combining water and fire you can get vapor release and by combining fire and earth you get lava release.

Correct.

Fire beats Wind due to the "fanning of the flames" since most Wind jutsu simply add oxygen, which enlarges flames; why it's beaten by water, seems fairly obvious.

Katon is a mainly offensive element.

Now, let's begin. You'll notice a platform in the fire-pit. I want you to go over to it, sit down, and meditate.

Other than the obvious heat, what does the fire invoke in you?

*I walk over to the platform, sit down, and meditate. After some time passes, I notice a warm sensation in my abdomen area. This sensation brings a feeling of empowerment. Almost like a natural high.* O_O

I want you to focus specifically on the flames themselves. What do you notice about them? How do they feel, how do they move? How do they act? Fire is often described as a living element, something that supports its place among the Yang elements quite nicely.

*I see that the fire moves wildly, with no rhythm. Apart from the obvious heat, I feel a lively feeling. I feel this energy spread out among the field we are training in and in myself as well. the fires act as if they are trying to grow and spread by absorbing the oxygen in the air.*

Good. Now, I want you to close your eyes, and visualize a flame within your body.

I want you to clear your mind except for that flame - using the fire around you as a template, I want you to feed that flame, and synchronize with the fires around you; it's this flame that we'll use as the springboard for your chakra to take the step to acquire the Katon element.

*Uses a low level wind technique, causing the flames to roar up and become much large.*

That might help...light your fire.

*I close my eyes and visualize a flame. A flame in the center of my chest. I clear my mind of everything except the flame. I feel that the flame has grown from your wind. I envision the fire growing and growing. The flame in my chest is now the size of the fire outside. Almost like the same fire.* O_O

Now think about the qualities of the fire, and try to apply them to the flame in your mind, so that you can feel it as well as see it; the heat coming off it and the specific way that heat feels,...the way it moves and dances, the sound of it's crackling roar...

*I visualize the growing fire until I can see it clearly. I feel the fire in my body. Its not a burning sensation but warming. It doesn't hurt but feels good. It move rapidly and vigorously. It's sound is that of a camp fire.*

Alright, now we need to intensify those aspects. We need to feed the flame, so to speak, so that the fire burns hotter, and it becomes more energetic. Fire, being Yang, is not a static element. It's constantly moving, and we need to take these abilities, and translate them into your chakra.

*Using a wind-stream technique, I blow more wind into the fire, causing it to roar up even hotter, as I kick over a barrel of oil that I prepared earlier - the oil spills into the pit with the wind, and the fire drastically leaps.*

*I open my eyes and look at the fire in front of me. Its size increased dramatically from your wind jutsu. I put my hand out and imagine the fire growing. I feel it growing. I feel some of my energy drained from imagining it. I keep feeding the flames until its twice the size.*

Now you need to take all the attributes you've discovered from the fire and applied to that inner flame, and make your chakra take on those attributes - your chakra should feel as fire, and be nearly indistinguishable between the flames around you and the one in your mind.

*I turn around my back facing the fire. I feel my chakra flowing and apply the atributes Ive learned to it. I feel the heat inside my body and feel vitality. I then stick my hand out and flow the chakra into and out of my hand. I make fire*

*Watches chakra flow out of your hand, and not quite fire.* Ha! Doesn't quite work that way.

But, let's see if you've got the premise down. *Hands you a slip of chakra paper.*

Run your chakra through it - I'll tell you if you succeeded or not.

*I take the chakra paper and hold it tightly in between my hands. I flow my chakra into my hands and onto the paper. I keep putting chakra into the paper and visualize it getting hotter and hotter.*

Nicely done! ^_^

So, to begin, the first jutsu we'll be learning is:

Rank: D
Type: Offensive
Range: Short
Chakra cost: 10
Damage points: 20
Description: The user shoots balls of fire at the opponent.

This jutsu requires no handseals, and introduces the basics of most fire-jutsu that we'll be preforming.

Due to the short range, and low power, this isn't something that you'll likely ever be using in battle, but it's still a useful technique, if a low-rank wind jutsu comes your way, or just find yourself in need of a little bit of flame.

The performance of this jutsu is very simple: you'll inhale a large lungful of air, and infuse the air with your Katon chakra as it enters your lungs. Then, you'll exhale in small bursts, using your Katon chakra to ignite the air; note, you use your chakra to ignite the air once it's outside your body, though this should seem like common sense.

Alright, I'd like you to give the technique a try - describe what you do with your chakra, and how you use it to actually form the fireballs. ^_^ Make three of them.

*I inhale as much air as I can. When Im finished gathering my air, I infuse some of my fire chakra into my lungs. I gather the air into my mouth and visualize a ball of fire. I add as much chakra as I can and then blow out the air very hard. As soon as the chakra infused air hit the normal air I burst more chakra out of my mouth. I then attempt to shoot out three fire balls.*
