Well the fact he is classed a pure Swordsmen which means without his sword he would be weaker while Shanks seems the type that could fight with his bare hands as well also it would make sense as well since it would Shanks ahead of Mihawk in overall strength.

zoro is a pure swordsman....yet i remember seing him fight without it? what makes the greatest swordsman not achieve this fit.....have you seen shanks fight without a sword? since he seems to be the type to fight without one?

But the point was when Zoro fights without his swords he immediately becomes weaker due to the fact he is a pure swordsman.

Anyway regarding Shanks of course I'm only going by speculation but I can't see him not having extreme fighting abilities such as kicking and punching considering he is a Yonkou.
