Your partially correct. Zabuza was the reason they stopped that tradition. The shinobi were paired up and fought to the death,but it wasn't a battle royal. Half of the class would live....zabuza changed that. He merked the entire class by him self.

He dose resemble zabuza a lot. I actually mistook him for zabuza before noticing the scar. There is no way to know for sure though.

Kakashi would have been the deciding factor imo. He has a knack for winning fights with no prior intel or prep time. Chiyo and sakura only did so well due to chiyos intel and sakura having an antidote prepped

I can't see someone as feirce as zabuza doing poorly in the chuunin exams. True we don't know much of him prior to his introduction,butyou don't trip and accidentaly kill a whole class. Weak shinobi or not.
