I don't think so. Gaara did fall unconscious just at the sight of seeing his own blood iirc. Sasuke won that fight imo but lost against 1/4 transformed Jin Gaara.

Also he wasn't forced into a desperate situation by sasuke, At least it wasn't the reason for him opting for shukaku. He took a much greater beating from Gated Lee when he did from base sasuke's taijutsu. Things only got desperate for him after chidori landed and wounded him.
The reason for him going the shukaku route was more his thirst for Blood and his murder boner sasuke rather than being backed into a corner.

False Sasuke was the 1st one to break through his sand armour and make him bleed. GAARA ran away so he can recover while Sasuke chased him down. Sasuke was the clear winner in that fight
If you are to go to any rank above genin, you need to be well balanced and possibly an expert in some sort of way. You need to be able to be on your own or lead if you need to. That takes skill, power, and the right mind-set. So. I think Shikamaru was the only one prepared to be a chunin, both skill wise and in his mind-set. People that probably came close were: Neji, Naruto, and Sasuke.
Neji was the closest one IMO to getting it.. the only thing that stood in his way was Naruto beating him in the final round. It's not that he lacked skill or anything, that's just how it went.. which possibly is due to him being distracted with the whole Hyuga destiny thing.
Sasuke is behind Neji. He certainly was smart enough and had the skills to be a chunin.. but he teetered on both having the mind-set for it and not. Just like how Kakashi confronted Boruto saying he is skilled enough, but doesn't have the right mind for it.. Sasuke lacked the real willingness to work with a team (even be in charge of one).
Naruto is the only other one that had potential to become a chunin. He defeated Neji and demonstrated his will of fire. He has the power of a chunin, but lacks the maturity needed to pull off certain missions if he were to be in charge of a team or on his own.

Sasuke. In the exams he had Gaara beat then Gaara fainted a little while after when they fled. If all went different he would have fainted mid stadium. Sasuke vs Naruto in the finals = Sasuke's win.

Yeah. But would Sasuke at that point really be able to beat the sheer numbers of Naruto's shadow clones? The number thing could have been successful against Neji if Neji didn't have a defensive move in Rotation. Sasuke has no defensive move, can't tell which Naruto would be the original and at that point couldn't spam chidori..
The problem with Gaara is what exactly? He was no longer able to fight during mid fight. How long are you going to keep making excuses for someone who ran away from a battle and couldn't continue fighting at the time
