If he has the wits to trick dojutsu prodigies then I don't see why he wouldn't be able to use illusions effectively. Plot is the only thing preventing him from being better than majority of Uchiha, his shadow clone trickery with illusions would be overwhelming for any dojutsu user.

No he set up that Izanagi to activate like that to fake his death. Itachi set Amaterasu to activate when Sasuke saw another Sharingan. Itachi's was a fail safe. Madara's was his plan.
