Lel, Kishi accomplished his goal too well. He wanted to make Sakura a normal child that symbolizes human weakness. Why would anyone be interested in that in a manga about ninjas, let alone want to identify as that?

I'm aware that this will sound like a rant at first..but hear me out. It's aggravating because those of us that are aggressive, analytical, stoic, logical, and have thin patience for BS don't really identify with a lot of the female characters in anime. Honestly..based on what you've described I have a difficult time believing anyone who doesn't subscribe to gender identity would be able to relate to any of the female characters in anime. It would also explain why a lot of people in western culture may find it more difficult to become engaged in anime as opposed to more western comics. It's more about a chasm in the value and belief system regarding gender as a concept.

Yeah - I read shonnes more despite not being interested in certain elements, because despite lack of females characters they are often less annoying than many shojo's out there. Where they literally seem to find sexual harassment and rape situations romantic. I don't like to get a BP problem over a silly manga so I click back button as soon as realize where I landed and find something else and end up reading male oriented books more. smh

Seriously - so much anger over manga treatment of Naruto females when I can't to see that many impressive females in most other shonnes either. Some have better fan service though with females having big boobs and revealing outfits and fight in a style to augment on those. They still get save by lead MCs sooner or later and start to fall behind as the series gets longer.

I did not have much hope for her character. Just had complete indifference with it. She impressed me in the Sasori fight but after that it went downhill. I still think she should have been a far better heroin and handled a lot better. Kishi completely shitted on her character.

Ugh...really??? Isn't it bad enough that shojo's generally only revolve around romance and giggling, and rainbows and butterflys and shit? Well...I know I'll be sticking to shounen..it seems like sexual harassment and rape are at least discouraged and penalized.

The surprise Kishi has been showing on Sakura's popularity or questions regrading her tells me not only he doesn't get female characters that well his editors and the anime studio deliberately pushed Hinata ahead to give a nod to cultural traditions and standards.

Traditionalists who want devoted wives and want to encourage the conservative values to an extent. They have had quite a restricted culture in many terms and all the females characters in the end fit in those very roles. Even Tenten - I maybe wrong since I don't live in Japan but net articles say women often prefer to be housewife with a part time job or start their own business because after a certain stage they practically have negligible chances of promotion or any advancement in jobs.

Anyway one can only hope Sarada , Himawari and other next gen females get better treatment and Kishi uses his relatively free time in seeing the world enough to learn how girls are and probably in slightly better position to argue with his editors after finishing his first venture successfully.

Being shy and letting editors and anime studios push yourself around too much doesn't help when you are not that good at writing certain type of characters in the first place. They will screw your ideas too and replace it with fragmented fan service pieces.

It's annoying truth that a lot of shojo out there is as bad in handling female characters and keeps feeding silly female sterotypes. Or Japanese idea of romance is very awkward for me.

I think the problem with Sakura was that there weren't to many ideas one could take with her and make it work.

Problems with parents/family? Get in line.
Bad childhood? Get in line.
Underdog storyline? Get WAAAY back in the line.

Sakura was just a regular girl with a regular life. Kishimoto tried to do something with her relationship with Sauske, but honestly, no one really cares about any character in Naruto have girlfriend/boyfriend troubles. This isn't a slice-of-life, it's an action story. The reason Hinata got so much attention was because she is an underdog with the immense pressure of being the heir to the clan. Her story is something a lot of people can sympathize with, but who is gonna sympathize with someone who lives an ordinary life and whose only problems in life revolve around crushes? Very few people unless the show is geared toward that domestic life.

No to have more fights than she did with Sasori. Also knowing her background more. Giving her a character development arc etc.

-Actually wanted something in her life (hokage) other than simply get with a hot boy
-Didn't take shit from anyone and stood up for her and beat anyone who teased her unlike her
-Fought along side Minato
-Helped him become hokage and taught him seals
-Even till the end of her life helped him and protected her son and not forgetting to breath
-Continues to influence Naruto's mind and puts him on the right track even after death
