You know Girls does read shounen manga, but usually they did that for the Bishounen/Pretty Boys,
like Kuroko No Basket, Prince Of Tennis, Gintama and Haikyuu,

There are manga like that, who provide fanservice for the female readers....
but if you;re looking for shounen battle manga that does the female character justice then you better stop now,
i mean to begin with all this argument about "manga that doesn't demean their female characters but takes them seriously" is completely subjective yes ?

And there also the fact that you're looking for a decent/serioulsy taken female character in shounen manga,
do you even know what shounen means ? of course you knew yes ?
this entire genre is aimed at boys, so what do you think their 1st concern when making the manga/anime ? its " will the boys watch/read it ? are they going to like it ? to an extent that they're going to buy every single one of the volume/BD ?

see ? they don't care about what the female think, because in the end of the day they're making a series for boys in a magazine that dedicated for boys, they can do whatever they want to the female character as long as the boys like it,

Female readers have their own marketing field and its called shoujo and Yaoi
or you can always try some slice of life anime with romance in it.

Not all girls only like romance novels, I find a lot of shoujo unpalatable because they don't take the story seriously, I do like some shoujo but most are simply soap opera's and I can't stand soapy drama.

Also not all girls "only" read manga for the cute boys, granted we may have a favorite pin up but that doesn't mean we are not reading for the story.

I understand that shonen is aimed at male readers, however in written novels there are also genre's aimed at male readers and yet a lot of those deliver strong female roles. I find it disappointing that Manga Ka's are becoming so shallow that they feel it would threaten there readers to have female characters with a point to them.

I also find it disappointing that the publishers are failing to recognize the growing market.

I we look back at Manga there are several older Manga's that represent the female role better than modern Manga, Gundam Wing, Tenchi and Dragon Ball all had female characters that had some significant role.

Ah, such is life, I guess for Manga to evolve will take some years, for me this is about the capability of the writer.

BTW: I'm not looking for manga, I simply wished to start a discussion on the subject, as I said for me this is all about the capability of the writer, a Manga Ka with the writing capability to create in a manga where the male lead is obviously the strongest but where the female character has a significant role whithin the story, they are out there Buso Renkin is a decent example. It is not about what they wear, as pointed out by me and others, girl are quick enough to dress our favourite boys in a least as possible.

Look, I' m sorry, I worded the discussion for this thread terribbly, I'm not good at it, I shoulded start threads:O

Nonsense. This is an amazing thread. One actually realizes how a good show can be screwed in the name of fan service, marketing and stuff like that when you go through this thread.

Disclaimer: I am not putting all male fans in one category. Off course there are various degrees of likings to everything and then some are on end of the spectrum to either side.

The series you just mentioned are still too young and short. We will see how they grow in later stages.

Besides a quick search for this anime showed me these responses:

So they made engineered soldiers to look like highschool teens for the reasons? I don't watch it so maybe you can explain..

FT - I don't read that either but Ulter Milkowich is not in a position to hog screen time according to wiki. And that's the thing - female characters may have some time- as a side character or in an arc or too but they are not to steal the lime light away from main male characters for too long.

There were few scene where Nami got to shine ( against women or using her feminism to charm ) and since then she is running in Bikini .......Don't get even me started on Tashigi. To think I hoped more from her character than keep pouting ..

Guys having female ava lol That doesn't mean much. Some are just admiring their favourite drawing some are literally trying to play female.

I just don't worry over it too much because expecting too much depth in shonnen manga is rather wasting time. They will improve when society changes.

Hermione Granger is good example of better written character but then the writer is female and it's a book not a manga trying to keep the rating every week.

This is why people shouldn't even give their opinion on what they don't know : Coppelion are the characters that were made by Dr Coppelios,in other word "Dolls" all of them are females with the exception of one who is a male (but going deeper into this is just spoiling everything) each of them have different abilities & a duties ...all of them were trained in a very young age like regular people in a school that still experimented on them to see how far could they go(but all of this is seen in flashabcks).Coppelion are immune to radiations which is why they are being use/work for the government to go to the rotten apocalyptic old Tokyo in search of survivors , doing the work regular people can't do etc . The school outfits don't matter , not once have they been used for fanservice or anything like that(and this series is already 200 chapters in) ....I guess you can say that's for cover or the safest way to look friendly for the survivors who have been living in that part of the city for years & know noting about the existing world. Like I said in my post ........all characters equally balance in the story .

Of course, am just mentioning the majority of girls reader in manga and anime industry,
Its not all but the Majority of female readers go for that, they're yearning for that fan service and some BL flag in that manga

Its Novel alright ? Manga and Novel is in no way similar, the closest thing that the Japanese produced in term of literary with the novel is the infamous "Light Novel" and even that are becoming such plotless galore,

just recently an anime/manga industry expert and oscar winning director Hayao Miyazaki voiced his discontent with the direction the anime/manga industry has taken, he said

Nowadays people whose involved in anime and manga industry don't have enough interaction with real people
If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you've never seen it
Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves
Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know
It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans
And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!

After looking at anime Like SAO and Kyokai No Kanata am fully agree with Miyazaki..

I also find it disappointing that the publishers are failing to recognize the growing market.

You can't blame them after all they're only doing what the best for now, and compared to Female readers who read for the story, they can get more money doing fanservice to attract the Otaku's, IMO even the pretty boys manga generate more money and have more fanbase than the "female readers who read for the story"

TW: I'm not looking for manga, I simply wished to start a discussion on the subject, as I said for me this is all about the capability of the writer, a Manga Ka with the writing capability to create in a manga where the male lead is obviously the strongest but where the female character has a significant role whithin the story, they are out there Buso Renkin is a decent example. Like i said earlier this entire argument is subjective, say Buso renkin is good series yes ? did you know what happened to it ? it got axed before reaching its a 100 chapter or maybe even 50 if remember correctly, it have good female lead but its not what the people want at that time,

its all about money, if its generate money then they'll continue doing it if not then they better abandon it and look for a better project,

its hard to argue about this because the mangaka/writer/illustrator/ only did what the best for their company..
you should read Ira's signature "Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes. "

I don't like her but sometimes she's right....

I wasn't criticizing the Manga Ka's I understand that they are under pressure from there publishers to pigeon hole there work, but that is a shame.

I suppose on the bright side it only means that Manga has a lot of room to grow and that is a good thing, anything that has run out of growing room just dries up ^___^

And Buso Renkin prob didn't get cancelled because of a strong female lead, it was a good Manga but it had a lot of problems.

Honestly, Im a girl and I love Shonen manga and anime. The big chested girls and ripped clothing isnt really the problem, it all comes down to the personality of the girls. Though FT has the most fan service in most of these animes, it has the most badass females. Erza is one of the best Females characters, because as a character she is in charge of her own sexuality and isnt the typical shy types being put into awkwards situations. Naruto's female characters have no depth. And thats why Kishimoto really dissapoints me. He gives it to all the other main characters except Sakura.

Orihime's breasts are now so big that each one is probably larger than her head.

It's actually quite dumb. Her VA in the anime is annoying as well, can't stand it when she speaks.

And that's why people should have better reading comprehension skills as well- Did I give an opinion on Coppelion? No. I asked a question. The quotes were from a discussion from somewhere else. The reviews I found doesn't agree with your views on it:

So the opinions about the story too differ as well depending what one is expecting from the show. Maybe anime differed from the manga too much? However, in the context of the thread topic that's not my concern either.. The point I was making was that Japanese mangas/anime fans love their highschool girls in short skirts. Or which Govt will spend their money on genetically engineered girls in for rescue mission as opposed to just getting some Hazmat suit?

Fan service doesn't have to be extreme all the time still it exists and seeing that this manga is classed as seinnin not shonnen it was not like they were trying to relate to teens but appeal to older audience. And that was the whole point. I was not reviewing Coppelion but the role of girls in the manga is drawn with male audience in mind. And on that topic Coppelion just shows that degree may vary but the phenomenon is not restricted to shonnens genre only. So let's us keep it to that.
