Before I begin I would like to say that this is not a bashing thread but rather a genuine question I had for a long time seeing how many people worship DBZ as if it is in a class of its own where its difference from other stories is as big as earth's from sky. I have only seen 150-200 episodes so excuse me if my opinion is biased.

First of all, if you were to describe its story, what would you say its plot is about? Does it have any depth? Despite having watched so many episodes I've never actually got to find a specific plot other than random villains having as sole motivation world domination or destruction for fun, who had to be defeated.

Their fights are very unrealistic: They punch you, crush you, tear you into pieces and you're up and about in no time.
the way power ups are given is crazy. In one moment you're on the verge of dying and on the other you're invincible. I remember when that Kid defeated Cell and then out of the blue he came back stronger than ever.

Even Goku was at the other world and it was as if he was having a blast.

The big buu was waiting patiently for the kids to complete their fusion and when they finally did it and started to fight, instead of killing them right away for being incapable of fighting well, he waited till they did the preparation they wanted.

I understand that it's all about comedy but I would like you to point me out if there is any deeper message somewhere hiddden in the story, which I failed to see. By no means I have as aim to demote it or criticise the fans for liking it, just all this worshipping around it made me wonder: What's all this fuss about it? What is so special about it? You, the fans, can you enlighten me please?

DBZ released in 1984, the manga which inspired Kishimoto, and why people like it?? It has everything in it, characterization, humour and ya action...It was the first anime where even action sequence were choreographed, so for most of the people it is their first manga/anime(for me also)...And the very next reason is power scale, who doesn't like Goku's kamehameha???

As far as i can tell , dbz was one of the first anime , most anime watchers watched . It was the favorite anime in most of the anime watchers childhood . As a kid , even i really enjoyed the show . But if i see back now , even i dont find dbz's plot to be that good . I think its pretty repetitive . But i still dont say it s a bad anime . I love it as it was a part of my childhood .

For you to have enjoyed DBZ you needed to have watched back in it's prime days and whithout any spoilers. Everyone nowadays knows what a super saiyin is but back when Goku first turned SS it was one of the biggest WTF moments in the history of anime.

The reason the plot seems so similar to other anime's is because almost all Shonen Jump writers derive inspiration from the Dragon Ball/Z series. Just look at two of the most popular Anime's now, Naruto and One Piece. Both Anime's main characters are remarkably similar to Goku.

To put it simply, you could say that DB/Z was the father of modern Anime.

I see so it was the first manga that ever became an anime and therefore it was like the debut of the anime in general
Plot is: Fight to near death; Power-up and kill villain
Lol that's a bit sad.

Well can't say I blame you. When you're a young kid you don't actually have issues with it plot nor you do care as far as it is entertaining.

Well Dragon Ball Z was an inspiration for my favourite story so I should be thankful.

Not only Kishimoto, my friend, you can add Oda to the list too, and a bunch of many others.

Dragon Ball changed the whole world's view of Japanese Comics, or anime, and by so opening the doors for other Mangakas to be famous outside of Japan too.

How DBZ's plot is depends on you deep you look.

to the surface, its bascially "Bad guy comes in, Good guys kill them, yay everybody"

but if you go deeper:

Frieza Saga - The last remaining Saiyans overthrowing a tyrant that destroyed their homeworld 20 years ago. Freiza was afraid of the fabled "Super Saiyan" transformation because it would have power that would surpass his own. Ironically, all his actions brought about his defeat of the very thing he tried to prevent: The last pure-blooded Saiyan (at the time) reaching the legendary status of Super Saiyan and ended the horrors of Frieza

Android Saga - A mad scientist who wants revenge on a Kid Goku who singlehandedly destroyed his organization, and has worked behind the scenes for 20 years in order to create special Androids to fulfill his one purpose. Sadly, his creations turned against him and he gets killed, and his final creations take over those two and become a Perfect being, indirectly completing the scientist's wish, but in his own way and more.

Buu Saga - A pink blob gets revived and kills everyone. There is no real past to this, just a bunch of closure to everyone. (AKA Gohan's power up, Vegeta admitting his place compared to Goku, Goku proving that everyone has to rely on him).

In Naruto Terms:

Frieza - Tobi

Dr. Gero - Madara (at the moment)

17 & 18 - Obito (at the moment)

Cell - Juubi

as I'd agree that the plot indeed kinda sucks, but it makes it up for that with incredible and outstanding fights, characters designs and character devolpents....overall the story might not be intriguing, but nonetheless it's quite entertaining, and was made for all ages lol

People worship DBZ because that's what they group up watching. We all really like our childhood memories cause they feel nostalgic. Like how all the 90's kids go on about reminiscing the good old days.

If you were to group up with Naruto (Basically swap Naruto with DBZ) then people would be Naruto mad and saying it's the best.

Basically, it goes down to exposure. DBZ was broadcasted EVERYWHERE and thus why so many people grew up watching it.

---

I agree with your post fully, as most people around me say "DBZ is the best". I always then ask what's after DBZ? Then they won't answer. Because if you watch various anime shows, DBZ probably wouldn't be in your top 3.

And yes, DBZ doesn't have a legit storyline. One Piece and Naruto do. Bleach...not so much.
