IMO it's famous for two things -
1.DBZ is famous for its fights.... I love DBZ.... Whenever I am bored and feel like watching simply over the top action scenes.... I watch DBZ.... =D =D

2.For Goku's journey.... The plot of DB and DBZ might not be complex but Goku's journey from the start of DB to the end of DBZ is heartwarming.... A guy from some other planet who has no family and no friends and lives on a mountain alone meets a girl and goes on a journey with her.... Makes true friends,gets a family and saves the world.... Sounds stereotypical but still its a great watch.... =D =D

DBZ is awesome in its golden years and well beyond. there are few/no manga or even non manga that does not have some DBZ elements

i get what you mean, but the reason people worship dbz is due to nostalgia manly. dbz as far as i know has no story its just beat up that guy and save the day but thats all it needed to entertain young boys as when your a kid you dont care about plot holes or story you just wanna see goku punch the bad guy.

if you want a plot watch dragon ball as its plot was about a boy discovering the world and looking for the dragon balls well wanting to become a stronger fighter plus the fights are better plus you get to see characters like krillan, tien and yamcha before they became completely useless also master roshi was beast back in the days of dragon ball
