Well it was a pioneer for this specific genre.
Of course; most things develop in time, people exepcting it to have better plot quality like Naruto or One Piece is like expecting a phone who came out 15 years ago having same progression as the brand new iPhone.

Also there is nostalgia effect. İt sort of represents what many people had in childhood and cling to; watching Goku going SS would differ to an adult and a child; all those insane stuff going on in that anime was simply astonishing a fresh mind. Maybe people like remembering those stuff; to me it revolves around the concept of being "child" again; something many people miss without being aware of.

DBZ is not about having a great plot/story, it's a classic story about a hero that saves/protects earth from many dangers/ threats so basically it's about the noble biggest bad ass in history (GOKU) kicking ass all over the universe.

from the rivalry between him and vegeta to becoming friends (and rivals at the same time) to the awesome villains and the FIGHTS (oh god those fights), DBZ is legendary (success and quality) ........................ too many memories :T_T:

Goku : favorite hero of all times, the biggest bad ass EVER/legendary fighter/has world destroying powers/has a heart of gold/it's not wise to mess with him if he gives you his legendary warning "i won't say this again but you need to get of this planet" then you are screwed.

I see so it was the first manga that ever became an anime and therefore it was like the debut of the anime in general
Not only that it actually changed the way people look towards Japan, in general, just like the guy below this said...U_U
Not only Kishimoto, my friend, you can add Oda to the list too, and a bunch of many others.

Dragon Ball changed the whole world's view of Japanese Comics, or anime, and by so opening the doors for other Mangakas to be famous outside of Japan too.
Yes dude, I could have added many others...=D=D

People worship DBZ because that's what they group up watching. We all really like our childhood memories cause they feel nostalgic. Like how all the 90's kids go on about reminiscing the good old days.

If you were to group up with Naruto (Basically swap Naruto with DBZ) then people would be Naruto mad and saying it's the best.

Basically, it goes down to exposure. DBZ was broadcasted EVERYWHERE and thus why so many people grew up watching it.

---

I agree with your post fully, as most people around me say "DBZ is the best". I always then ask what's after DBZ? Then they won't answer. Because if you watch various anime shows, DBZ probably wouldn't be in your top 3.

And yes, DBZ doesn't have a legit storyline. One Piece and Naruto do. Bleach...not so much.
Yeah indeed bleach tries to have a deep plot but at the end of the day it's just fighting with Ichigo getting all the power ups and mastering everything.
Well it was a pioneer for this specific genre.

Indeed nostalgia plays a major role.

i agree with most of your points...!!
i know right, people just worship dbz, but the matter of is its not that great...

i will give you two reason why most people worship it...
most people get into anime/manga because of dbz
(i remember myself waking up at 1 o' clock at night so that i could watch 2episode marathon of dbz on toonam)
its nostalgic and i like it too but dont actually worship it as others do

its action heavy, and most people want to see alot of action, also the reason for naruto being so popular...

i dont blame you if dbz doesnt look special to you afterall it was 20 years old and things changed so much in that time however it was a masterpiece and epitome of anime at that time and many people grewup watching it.
It may not deep plot but it covers that with amazing fights & powerup.

I loved DBZ as a kid. But now, when I rewatch the episodes, I think to myself, what the hell?

If I hadn't watched it back then, and chose to watch it now, I would be uninterested in it.

I'll probably think the same about Naruto in a few years from now.

Before I begin I would like to say that this is not a bashing thread but rather a genuine question I had for a long time seeing how many people worship DBZ as if it is in a class of its own where its difference from other stories is as big as earth's from sky. I have only seen 150-200 episodes so excuse me if my opinion is biased.

First of all, if you were to describe its story, what would you say its plot is about? Does it have any depth? Despite having watched so many episodes I've never actually got to find a specific plot other than random villains having as sole motivation world domination or destruction for fun, who had to be defeated.

Their fights are very unrealistic: They punch you, crush you, tear you into pieces and you're up and about in no time.
the way power ups are given is crazy. In one moment you're on the verge of dying and on the other you're invincible. I remember when that Kid defeated Cell and then out of the blue he came back stronger than ever.

Even Goku was at the other world and it was as if he was having a blast.

The big buu was waiting patiently for the kids to complete their fusion and when they finally did it and started to fight, instead of killing them right away for being incapable of fighting well, he waited till they did the preparation they wanted.

I understand that it's all about comedy but I would like you to point me out if there is any deeper message somewhere hiddden in the story, which I failed to see. By no means I have as aim to demote it or criticise the fans for liking it, just all this worshipping around it made me wonder: What's all this fuss about it? What is so special about it? You, the fans, can you enlighten me please?
Most fans of DBZ in the generation that I am in grew up watching it. it was one of the few shounen anime that aired on National Television that Was targeted towards adolescents. Most people that Really really appreciate dragonballz are appreciating their memories/ experience of watching it as a kid, and how amazing it was, because it was really amazing back then. Still is, but nothing will compare like watching the story as it was aired episode by episode back then, wHen we were unexposed to anything that was really like it.

Well I don't really think about Naruto is the same. Naruto has a lot of deep messages and quite honestly if I were to watch it at the age of 10, I would still like it but I would definetely be incapable of appreciating its plot and its characters as much as I do now.

I liked DBZ, the screams of the power-ups. But that's all.
DBZ is spineless (in other words, without a complete story package like Naruto)
After watching Naruto, DBZ is nothing for me.

Aside from a couple exceptions there wasn't anything quite like it at the time. DBZ was a standalone series, and created the blueprint for many future shounen. Now does that make it the greatest of all time? Not really, but at the same time you can't tell a good parent you're better than them.

Well considering that most people love DBZ because they grow up with it, it can't be helped. Nothing can keep up with the nostalgia about your childhood:( I'm 17 and now and when I look back when I was at the primary school a broad smile appears on my face=D

It introduced me to the theory of never giving up.
It introduced me to the theory of family and friends and the bonds.
It taught me that even evil can turn out to be good.

It introduced me to awesome ness...

I'm not going to lie, I have always been a big DBZ fan. In all honesty, near as I can tell, there was never any real plot to it. It was aimed to be lighthearted and fun. It was all about preventing the destruction of Earth. The series was initially aimed at the young children's market because the Anime market wasn't as big as the Cartoon market. There were also Censorship issues. Dragon Ball Z is in a class of it's own for those who grew up with it. I remember waking up in the mornings before school just to watch it. In short, the basic storyline for DBZ is following Goku through his adult years and watching Gohan grow up while the other characters mature.

Dragon Ball Z is based on the second part of the Dragon Ball manga. It is a close adaptation and at the time, the anime was following the manga side-by-side. So there were alot of fillers in it. Due to it's original intended audience, there wasn't much plot to it. Watching it's predecessor, Dragon Ball, helps explain some things. Like how Goku and Chichi met.

Dragon Ball is like the father of Anime. It inspired other manga writers such as Tite Kubo and Masashi Kishimoto. If you watch Dragon Ball, you will see how Naruto is remarkably like Goku in terms of personality. Most of Naruto's personality was inspired by Goku.

Note - For those who aren't aware of the Censorship, think about why they use the words "Other world" to make it sound like they're just going away to some other dimension instead of dying. Mr. Satan is known has Hercule to avoid any religious slurs, While Videl is a play on the word Devil, and the words on the two ogres shirts read "HFIL" instead of "HELL".

Like many people have previously mentioned, DBZ is all about the memories, the X-factors (since we were never exposed to such material, there was never any expectations or heights we wanted to see), and all those aspects which DBZ is about (of course the fighting).

But I regard it as one of the best (if not the best - and I've seen a helluva lot of anime) simply because you need to consider everything about that generation to this. Just as people have mentioned: it was the first of it's kind, period. And for that reason I think so highly of it. Because DBZ opened up a whole new perspective on entertainment, due to it's very existence, animes such as OP, Naruto, Bleach (etc) all came to be, so if not for DBZ, then (granted those animes would probably be made) but there is no chance for them to be as big as they are, without DBZ ever existing.

Furthermore, for someone like Akira Toriyama to make something so amazing (for it's time), there's just no doubt, that through consideration-of-comparison, is he not one of the greatest mangaka's to be.

Hence why I rank it one of the (if not the) best, period.
