Mmkay, I took about a month break from the site (and pretty much the 'Net in general) to take care of some stuff. Anyway, I'm back, so yeah. Noticed a lot of arguments about Hashirama this, Minato that. Naw son, I'm here to set things straight.
Okay, as I'm certain you've seen the translation of what Kishimoto has said about Hiruzen's strength at his peak, I don't see the need for me to post it for the umpteenth time...
Ah to hell with, I wouldn't be me if I didn't spam post this again:
To my knowledge, both of the databooks following the 1st one state variations of the irrefutable fact that Hiruzen was indeed the strongest. Heck, Hashirama helped to train Hiruzen since he saw the potential he had. And as we've seen, the next generation unfailingly ends up surpassing its predecessor.
Hashirama was incredibly powerful. NO ONE is denying that; only a foo' would. It's just certain that at least two individuals were stronger than him.
His power was never compared to the Sage's. His power was said to have been thought of as a myth just as the Sage's existence was said to be.
Minato was also greatly hailed. A believed him to be unsurpassable, having faced him several times during the 3rd World War. I had a translator over on the wiki translate what Jiraiya says about Minato back in Part 1:
I bolded the word "calibre", because it means the level of his ability. Better put as his potential I suppose. He may have become stronger than his immediate predecessor, but apparently didn't reach that level before his young death based on other sources. Anyway, Tsunade also agreed with this statement despite her attitude at the time in the story, so this can't be put off as Jiraiya's bias.
Basically, let's calm down. Just because Kishimoto has pumped up Hashirama's status doesn't negate like a decade of canon everyone. He has just been expanded upon. Heh, I'm certain that the next time Minato or perhaps Tobirama has his power elaborated on, more of you will jump on that bandwagon.
I look forward to the certain hilarity I will get from the responses to this post.

Masashi Kishimoto said:Page 117: "He is such a genius ninja that he was even called the 'Professor', and he still garners everyone's respect as the strongest Hokage in history." (「„プロフェッサー”と呼ばれたほどの天才忍者であり、歴代最強の火影として皆の尊敬を集め続ける。」, "'Purofessā' to yobareta hodo no tensai ninja de ari, rekidai saikyō no Hokage toshite mina no sonkei o atsume tsuzukeru")
Page 119: "'Strongest in history', 'genius', et cetera, the words used to describe the Third Hokage are filled with respect." (「„歴代最強”„天才”など、三代目火影を形容する言葉は賞賛に満ちている。」, "'Rekidai saikyō' 'tensai' nado, Sandaime Hokage o keiyōsuru kotoba wa shōsan ni michite iru.")
Page 265: "The Third is called the strongest, even among the past Hokage, and he is even admired as the 'God of Shinobi'." (「三代目は歴代火影の中でも最強と言われ、„忍の神”と謳われたことも。」, "Sandaime wa rekidai Hokage no naka demo saikyō to iware, 'Shinobi no Kami' to utawareta koto mo")

Anyhow, that guy's calibre as a shinobi was number one in history… His brilliant mind was overflowing with talent for techniques… He had popularity galore. Well… he was as handsome a man as I am, no." (「四代目と比べられりゃ誰だってキツイだろーよ。なんせ あやつは忍としての器は歴代一だった…術の才に溢れ頭脳明晰…人望に満ち、まぁ…ワシ並みに男前だったしのォ」, "Yondaime to kuraberarerya dare datte kitsui darō yo.
