Its rather simple. The reason they went to the uchiha hideout is because of the setting.
Sasuke has wondered what it means to be a clan, a village, who he is, why itachi did what he did.

Look at it it this way, the whole meaning was to show that a village is greater than a clan. Another meaning why the hideout is in the village, the overall hierarchy is the village.

That to me is the reason and the purpose of the uchiha hideout was the setting more than anything.
