You do realize religious scriptures were written at different points in time, right? (Much like dinosaur fossils being separated between periods)
And the bible wasn't written by God (or whoever you believe came up with God). Only Genesis was said to have been narrated to Moses directly from God (and even then, argument can be made for the existence of the patriarchs). People like Moses, David, Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar, and yes, even Jesus of Nazareth that appeared later on are considered historical as well as biblical. People like Luke and Matthew and Paul witnessed the events taking place or were told of them and saw fit to write them down. And people make mistakes, unlike God, so the bible is very much inconsistent and full of gaps. And it's definitely affected by what the widespread beliefs were at the time, including both the passage of time and the shape and location of the Earth.
I believe in a God because I don't see the Big Bang happening without someone to set it off (any attempt to explain God through science is just foolish by nature). And I'm a Christian because of the fact that Jesus existed and I see him as a more viable contender for the Messiah than Muhammed. And it certainly wasn't because I had a family that squeezed that idea into my head. I believed in it because the stories (not the themes) of the bible really spoke to me as a person. If they don't for you, then more power to you.
