orochimaru goal was to toy with and kill the 3rd then go on to completely destroy the leaf due to the 3rds actions orochiamru left the battle with with wounds that would last 5 years, and protect the leaf for all that time. Also this made the sound retreat and prevent the leaf from loseing anymore people

2) His son asuma most likly had his orginal elements (fire/wind)
3) The anbu who used lighting pillers said "lord 3rd taught me everything i know"
4) earth and fire was shown
5) with the 2ed as a teacher he was most likly forced to learn water (keep in mind that you can learn any element)

There is A lost stronger Shinobi than him even though we don't know how he was in his prime.
