Well in Naruto's defense, He doesn't have a doujutsu that lets him see things that are hidden, chakra signatures in the form of colors to tip him off when a jutsu is about to be performed, or an armored plated deity that springs up to tank enemy attacks. So yeah like EVERY other ninja who isn't an Uchiha, he has to rely on gathered intel.

He beat 3rd Raikage on his own. It was his idea to seek intel for that fight. He defeated Kakuzu on his own though yes he did have intel.

I mean c'mon. Would you honestly go into a fight without any intel if your comrads had the 411 on your enemy's abilities? Having intel on an enemy beforehand doesn't make Naruto any less of a ninja. It actually makes him slightly more prudent than Sasuke who goes into every fight boasting how they are no match for his blessed eyes.

as for naruto beating the 3rd raikage on his own. He was saved numerous times by the rubber guy. not only that, had the rubber guy not told him about the fight with the 8 tails, naruto would have never know who to ask.

as for naruto being smarter for asking for intel, he doesn't ask he just gets spoon fed. hell jiraiya diead to give him intel on pain. without which he would have lost harder
