The religion literally granted full-on immortality, including being invincible. Considering this became Oro's ultimate goal in life, which would have allowed him ample time to learn all the jutsu of the world, why not simply adopt the religion to help him reach that goal? Clearly he would still have wanted an Uchiha body to eventually awaken Rinnegan, but why not pick up immortality along the line and make things go that much smoother?
On that topic, why was Hidan the one and only user of the immortality jutsu? Was it simply a power unique to him and he found meaning in believing in a higher power related to his gifts? If not, then why was no one else a part of it?
