The religion literally granted full-on immortality, including being invincible. Considering this became Oro's ultimate goal in life, which would have allowed him ample time to learn all the jutsu of the world, why not simply adopt the religion to help him reach that goal? Clearly he would still have wanted an Uchiha body to eventually awaken Rinnegan, but why not pick up immortality along the line and make things go that much smoother?

On that topic, why was Hidan the one and only user of the immortality jutsu? Was it simply a power unique to him and he found meaning in believing in a higher power related to his gifts? If not, then why was no one else a part of it?

I believe I read somewhere that the sacrifice ritual Hidan did, actually needs to be performed regularly to remain immortal. That explains why so few others would be Jashinists. As far as Orochimaru goes, I don't think he'd want his immortality to depend on the whim of some higher power, as he wants to be the ultimate power himself.

I don't think Oro would omit it as a possibility. If it was a choice between dying and adopting Jashinism, he'd take Jashinism. I doubt no one else in the entire Narutoverse wouldn't kill on a regular basis in order to be immortal.

well religion tends to have very strict rules, a possible rule could have been worded in a way that prohibits experiments ?
I doubt it would have such strict rules, but I'd believe he'd perhaps be prohibited simply due to his past dealings with human experimentation.

then he can't take over uchiha body...
Why would that prevent him? He'd simply perform the killing jutsu while using the replacement body.....

Hidan's immortality was dependant on some other being - on god Jashin to be precise. Orochimaru didn't want to be dependant on someone else.

You know, Jashin gives immortality, but seconds later he can take it away from you. Orochimaru wanted to decide himself about his future.

He was depending on superior Shinobi (Uchiha to be precise) in order to achieve his goals. He was depending on superior DNA to potentially extend his life and improve his stamina (Senju DNA). He was basically depending on the sage and the Rinnegan to achieve his goals. I don't see such a vast difference when considering the compromises of 'pride' he already sacrificed in order to progress his goals. He at least should have taken an interest in the religion and considered it as a possibility.

Hidan couldn't live forever, which is what orochimaru really wanted. Hidan can't be killed by the simple separation of Head and Neck, but could die of old age or Malnutrition. Orochimaru wanted to be immune to old age, hence constantly stealing 12 year old uchiha bodys. Anyway Orochimaru was bloody hard to kill. Naruto cut him in half and he walked it off.
