Why are people saying Indra didn't have the Rinnegan ?

Those spiral eyes is his Mangekyou pattern. Most likely to be Eternal already judging by his Susanoo.

Yeah but that would mean that his eye was as strong as an EMS by default and he had no need to implant other MS for EMS powerups

Sharingan is the devolved version of Rinnegan. Indra had the sharingan.. His Mangekyou was spiral shaped. Rinnegan isn't a spiral it's concentric circles or rings... He used his Perfect Susanoo against his brother Ashura.. That's why he's the eldest Uchiha Ancestor.. the first to have the Sharingan and Mangekyou.

Considering it was the very first Sharingan.. devolved directly from the Rinnegan of Hagaromo himself, it is very likely that it was just as strong if not stronger than modern EMS eyes. Especially since he fought against his OP Senju Ancestor brother with a chakra battle avatar for successor.

Which is likely why it looks the most similar to Rinnegan as well. Both were extremely OP, even if they only had devolved abilities.

That's what I was discussing about with S.J why didn't the reincarnations need to transplant other eyes if Indra didn't for his . May be his eyes didn't need EMS transplant and were that strong by default

Well going off the fact the fact that the sharingan devolved from the Rinnegan.. the Uchiha who were continued down his bloodline continued to devolve in their Sharingan potential and prowess. It's plausible that this devolution of the Sharingan or specifically Mangekyou has lead to the deterioration of vision after gaining power of the MS and the continued usage of it.

Which was the original idea of the EMS; transplanting the MS of another who's a match when the MS starts to succumb to blindness. It's only natural that after the eyes stop losing it's sight, that the full potential is awakened.. (The full potential of two already devolved Mangekyou Sharingan anyway)

Well a question you should be asking i that sasuke has a rinnegan and it wasn't from ashura's chakra but from Hagaromos Yin chakra why couldn't Indira? I think Like most people had pointe out indira has his Perfect striate Tomeo sharingan < Indira Mangekyou Sharingan (Basically an fully mastered EMS) < Some sort of Yin Rinnegan. He was the direct son of the six paths he got his half of power which evolves its techniques like what Sasuke and Kaguya have been showing as of late. I think the requires Ashuras chakra is just for the sore purpose to be able to Revive the Juubie but it also gives you all the basic powers of the rinnegan and depending on the user is how many and which abilities they unlock. Those eyes were probably an early sketch of Sasuke last power up or something of that nature thats why it swirls to resemble the Rinnegan but he chaned it over time because he had better ideas. Also i think inderas has all of Madaras/Sasuke abilities while all the other MS abilitys probaly stray from Kaguya that got awaken over generations of Uchihas like Obito Kamui.
