I feel you, but in the manga they referred to themselves as "clan" too. But that could've been a translation error or something. I think I remember now Madara being called the founder of the clan but I'm not sure what that's about

They're not. Madara was the first one to awaken the Mangekyo within the Uchiha Clan which Madara created. Before then, there was no Uchiha clan, so any other Uchihas that did awaken the Mangekyo before the establishment of the Uchiha Clan is irrelevant.
Since Indra wasn't a part of the Uchiha Clan, then he wasn't even considered in that statement.
