well it was only because what madara foretold came true, how badly the leaf have treated them and slandered them with false accusations like the kyuubi attack, the clan didnt even support Madara before, he was on his own when he left the village

It comes down to either Fugaku or Danzo....

Fugaku acting as the leader of the Uchiha, should never have placed his clan's let alone his children's (Sasuke/Itachi) lives in danger....all in the sake of Pride -.-

And while it is already a mistake the Uchiha start to dwell on a coupe....Danzo decides to set plans into action. Hiruzen still had a chance for peace, but Danzo doesn't take chances. He black mailed Itachi into a corner and in doing so caused the massacre.
