Minato saved the village from the fox and Tobi sacrificing himself.
Minato is also the sole person responsible for Konoha winning the third great shinobi world war.
Also Minato granted Konoha with a new Jinchuuriki.

Itachi assassinated his entire clan in order to prevent civil war in Konoha.

Minato wins if you ask me, he just simply did more than Itachi.
The Uchiha cou de etet(spelling) would not have been any more damaging than the fox attack.
Being the reason Konoha won the third shinobi world war sets Minato on top and giving Konoha Naruto also as the Jinchuuriki.

Also the fox would have been defeated with or without Minato really, just not as efficiently.
If worse came to worse Hiruzen would have used the death god to seal The Kyuubi.
There would have been alot more casualties ofcourse and the village would probably look like the aftermath of pains attack on Konoha.

itachi had to sacrifice the entire clan to stop a civil war. but he valued the life sasuke greater than the village. sasuke who only wishes to destroy the village now.

minato was intrumental in winning the third war. stopped tobi from destroying the village and saw his son to be the saviour of the world. hence sacrificing his life. could minato have killed his wife/child for the village?

from this i will give it to minato... he has done more for the country

They both did this in their own respective way, but I'd have to go with Minato on this one. At the end depending on what other impact Edo Itachi has, it could change.

There would be no Naruto or Itachi if it wasn't for Minato.
It's not the first time the village was in turmoil due to the 9tails.
1st Hokage battled with it also.
It's not fair to speculate that if Minato wasn't there then there would be no more Konoha.

Hiruzen could have sealed the fox if he deemed it necessary as well.
Who knows even Danzo may have helped.
Jiraiya also could have made an appearance along with Tsunade.
Several Uchiha could have gotten engulfed as well.

minato fought in war saved many lives and yes itachi saved kohana from sure destruction but minato won them the war
Minato fought a war and saved many lives, how does that work?
If anybody saved many lives, its itachi, not only did he stop a civil but also potential a takeover not only of the village but the country. Lets not forget war couldve easily broke out if itachi didnt do what he did. He clearly saved more lifes

Alot of people seem to forget that the title says who did more for their country. Minato helped greatly in a war and with this did his part for his village and country. But also sacrificing his life to take down the fox

Itachi first of all sacrificed the life of his loved once. Secondly not only did he stop a threat of civil, protecting the village he stopped a threat of invasion of the fire country his country.

Anyway both did great things therefore it can go either way depending on how you judge it

they both prevented the destruction of the hidden leaf. Minato by defeating the kyuubi, itachi by preventing a civil war. Just because itachi 'did more' to reach the same outcome doesn't mean squat. It's even so everyone stop getting emotional.
this is not about who did the same it is about who did more and regardless of how you feel itachi did more [plain and simple same goal but ultimately itachi wins this one after minato saved the village from tobi and the fox itachis actions have scaved off disasters one after another he saved the village the instant he killed his clan and defused the flames of war he joined akatskui to continue to look after his brother and the village and even after his death he still runs around trying to fix shit that the living still cant manage

Minato obviously. He stopped Tobi and left someone that will put an end to Tobi-Naruto. If Minato didn't stop Tobi, Itachi wouldn't be alive to do anything and as Itachi lived and protected Konoha but left someone that wants to destroy it but Minato left someone to protect it.

Both did great for their village, the only flaw in Itachi's actions was his leaving Sasuke alive for Sasuke's and the Uchiha clan pride. In Itachi's noble actions of wounding his own heart by assassinating his clan, including his family and other loved ones, he couldn't bring himself to completely exterminate his bloodline so he had to leave somebody alive to have the hope of one day killing him and returning honor to the Uchiha name, who better to do that then his most treasured little brother. However by leaving Sasuke alive and having him foster such hatred, he indirectly assisted in the breeding of one of Konoha's most powerful criminals and even further disgrace to his clan. Although not intentional (having Sasuke turn the way he did) it was of his will to some extent.

On the note with Minato, had he let Kushina sacrifice herself, the village would be safe and Minato would still be alive and able to defend the village much more efficiently then Hiruzen and could've remained in power as Hokage, not to mention, Naruto could've had a father and techer and he could've still been the Jinchuuriki, making his power even greater then what it is now. Kushina's dragging the kyuubi back inside her would've resulted in the halt of the Kyuubi's ressurection, however they would have to deal with the ressurection somehow and I feel Naruto would've still been made a Jinchuuriki. Minato's sacrifice was for the sake of Kushina to see her child grow up

Both of these shinobi suffered from slight impulses of passion and emotion, however both did great for their village and are to be praised, I don't think either did better then the other in terms of who did more for the village.

Itachi didn't do anything great in killing his own clan.

I mean seriously if the Uchiha were to try and takeover they still would have been wiped out, by the likes of:

Hiruzen
Minato
Itachi( loyal to the village)
Shisui( loyal to the village)
Kakashi
Guy
Jiraiya may have made an appearance as well
Anbu
And other shinobi clans; Hyuugas, Aburame, Akimichi, inuzuka, etc...

There would have been casualties of course but not nearly as much if the fox was not stopped by Minato.

If Itachi hadn't slaughtered the Uchiha clan they still would have been massacred, it just would not have been as quiet as the way Itachi went about doing it.

The Uchiha coup d'état would not have been as damaging as the fox attack, simply because they meant to overthrow the government not destroy Konoha. So at most they would have killed Hiruzen and the other elders and took their spots at the top of the village.
