uzumaki clans are known for their longevity.. that's why naruto wouldnt die just because the kyuubi was extracted.. i believe.. mito uzumaki was the first one who become the jinchurriki.. but survived that extraction... as for kushinas death... aside from extraction of the kyuubi, she was loosing her strength because of giving birth and with madara's doing..

Depends on how much of the Kyuubi is extracted I suppose.
I don't think Gaara has any of the Ichibi's chakra left - but that was a full extraction, obviously.

& the reason the brothers had some of its chakra is because they were eaten by the Kyuubi and had to feed on it to survive. xD

search at narutowikipedia about the uzumaki clan.. it's said there that kushina did not die from extraction... etc.. im still finding about mito..

No, he wouldn't have any of the fox's power left. As you said, extracting is different than releasing, if Naruto were to release the 9tails completely, then that would be it, although seeing how half of the 9tails was sealed by Minato, im not sure how that would work honestly...

Naruto is an Uzumaki .: there is a high chance of him surviving the extraction - Kushina survived it, so I don't see any reason why Naruto wouldn't - she died afterwards because Minato sealed part of hers and his chakra into Naruto, it's why he met her when he was "fighting" the Kyubi.

Is there some way Naruto can free the Nine-tails without dying? It's been bugging me for a while.

I bet hes talking about how everyone has used and treated the nine tails like it isnt a living being who feels pain and agony. The biju have been used as weapons of war since they were sealed into humans creating jinjuriki. I also think Naruto is trying to show the nine tailed fox compassion, knowing what its like to be hated and rejected by pretty much everyone. Just a thought though.

Narutos moms was on the verge of death after the beast was extracted from her, and told the 4th hokage to seal it back within her even though it would only delay the beasts return for a short time. They instead chose to seal their chakra their remaining chakra within Naruto along with the half the chakra of the demon fox. Mito Uzumaki because the first jinjuriki for the nine tails in the leaf. She had to watch he seal when she gave birth as well.
