what made naruto manga very popular?? is it the anime or the manga itself???

Well, can't speak for everyone but I was attracted to the series by the anime. Artwork and animation used to be awesome, as well as the much more important music and voice-acting. I still watch older anime-stuff of Naruto Shippuuden from time to time, because it is so well done.

I realized that there is something called "manga" when the series was already near the end xD

Sometimes the anime ruins the story with deviations or tooo much gore censoring(Berserk, tokyo ghoul, gantz, etc) or that white light of censor at the important "Plot" points.

there wouldnt be an anime in the first place if the manga wasnt popular.... U_U

The anime. I think if you asked people what the best part of Naruto is, a large majority would say the fights. The manga was never stellar in that regard, but the anime had quite a lot of really well choreographed fights.

There was also the fact that there was lots of mystery.
