I know you don't view the novels as canon- but in Sasuke's, Naruto tells people about Edo Itachi helping him and Bee in the war & stopping Edo Tensei (but not about the Uchiha massacre since they feel that if he told them then the villagers might discriminate against Sarada/Sasuke) and they are now okay with him. People were apparently at first skeptical but dropped it because Naruto has no reason to vouch for Itachi (as he has no major affiliation, they're not related, etc). People also initially questioned why he murdered his clan if he was a good person and Naruto vaguely replied with "I'm sure he had his reasons, we don't know his entire story after all". Kakashi vouched for this and everyone followed suit. But, Naruto told people who had heard about him already- people his age and older. The new gen doesn't know anything about Itachi, Sarada included.
In all the villages, if a character is revealed to have done something horrible but helped in the war effort- they were good to go. This is why people are now okay with Kabuto and Orochimaru (they stopped opposing Konoha) as well as others. With this manga canon, it is not a stretch to view the novel pseudo-canon with Itachi as fitting in. After all, Itachi's crimes are a drop in the bucket in comparison to Obito (Kyuubi attack which led to Uchiha massacre, Akatsuki leader and ordered jins to be captured, started war along with Kabuto, etc), Kabuto/Orochimaru (experimented on people when they were alive, killed 50+ babies for simple experimentation, kidnapped children, poisoned people, sacrificed people during Chuunin exams-Oro specifically did this, Kabuto started a war, enhanced a foul tech like Edo Tensei, etc).
But yeah, even if they let him stay in Konoha I doubt Itachi would want to or feel at peace with that idea.
