If I may say, I think people are afraid of the whole "Heart Surgeon being payed the same wages as a Janitor" situation. While both are equally important jobs, the former requires a very specific skill set not available to the general public. I'll admit, I don't know how Communism works in the field of "wages between different types of jobs", but, I remember my friend saying something about a merit based Communistic system.
For example, all Heart Surgeons make say, $150. Depending on who "works hardest", that wage increases. Same with all the others.
This encourages people to work hard, and rewards them for doing so, without breaking the fundamental system of equality of Communism - if someone is better off, it is because they worked harder...
...And I know I explained it horribly, something akin to a capitalistic system, and I also know that I probably just contributed nothing of merit to this thread.
But, I'll do this in response to the OP's statement: As an American, I do realize that Communism is a perfect system in theory. However, because of the element of human corruption, I don't believe that it is the best governmental form in practice. Neither, though, do I think our capitalistic economic view is correct either, and there is a large amount that is wrong with our government. One thing people don't realize, is that some Socialism is a good thing.
Meritocracy in Communism? Not really. One of the very foundations of Communism is
equal income.
However, you do make an incorrect assumption in saying that the skill-set of a heart-surgeon isn't available to the general public. In perfect Communism, your opportunities education-wise are endless.
Everyone can become a heart-surgeon, not just the people with the money. With more people comes more applicants, with more applicants comes more students, with more students comes more heart-surgeons. Supply meets demand.
Really though, perfect Communism requires an
extreme amount of dedication to achieve. The system works when it's in practise, it's the process of going from Capitalism to Communism that ends up burning. When you, as a dactor, are used to your awesome salary, it doesn't really seem fair that it's lowered, does it?
Communism works by creating an equilibrium in the NET-value of the individual. The rich fall to lift the poort; and most rich people don't like that one bit.
Regarding the 'janitor issue', I'd like to add that a a janitor cleans and maintains a school. If we make the students clean and call in mechanics to fix problems that need expertise, why do we need a janitor? Perfect Communism removes a lot of jobs, as they become obsolete in the
wave of part-time and full-time jobs. The janitor is free to become a heart-surgeon, because education is free and his jobs is being taken care of by the collective.
Naturally, Communism comes with a prize: we'll all need to work. Students will
have to have a part-time job and many retired individuals will be encouraged to take a part-time job, too. Don't get discouraged, though, because it's an easy burden for everyone to bear. Everyone carries a peeble, and suddenly you have a mountain.
