Was it necessary to eliminate the entire Uchiha Clan?

I would like to have Your opinion on this:

The Uchiha clan was killed off because they were trying to take over the village.

But the whole clan was eradicated! Not even children were spared (minus Sasuke). Was that necessary?

danzo and the others couldn't deceieve the rest of the village. everybody would be suspicious of why itachi really did it. plus itachi couldn't deceive sasuke when he said "I let you live because I needed your eyes"

Well, it was all Danzo's and the elders' twisted (but kind of true) way of thinking.

Leave some survivors (infants, women etc) and they would eventually want revenge from the village somehow.

Look at Sasuke, he was just a kid back then which seems logical not to kill. Now he's spamming undying flames out of his eyes and he has sworn to destroy Konoha. :shrug:

I think when it comes down to it, its not a matter of necessity its a matter of "lol, itachi is the 2nd youngest in the clan, and you guys are grown police ninja, and can't do anything!" Ok that was mean, Itachi had the element of surprise, and is a prodigy. I think there should be some Uchiha's that aren't Edo itachi or sasuke, and I don't think sasuke will have a baby >.> So the genocide of the uchiha's I'd say, was an unfortunate plot twist, I'm not even a uchiha fan.

for the sake of the story they had to die could you imagine a whole clan of super eye wielding ninjas with no one to keep them in check? well they would either rick roll everyone else with there eye techs or the senju would make there presence known

We have to assume that there were children amongst those Itachi and Tobi killed. It was necessary for the WHOLE clan to be eradicated, even Sasuke was scheduled to die. Like Danzo said, that was Itachi's only failure.

I still think there are some facts about the massacre that are yet to be revealed.

One thing that comes to mind is the 9-Tails attack on Konoha. Where was the Uchiha clan during this? They were the Konoha police force if I'm not mistaken. The only two Uchihas that were present during Tobi's attack were Sasuke and Itachi from Kushina's flashback.

Probably a few hundred. Tobi assisted if I remember correctly.

and the remnants would have sworn a vendetta and the whole thing would escalate again it had to be all or none

and since when were women children and the elderly defenceless in this series?
and if the elders didn't make itachi do it there would have been blood in the streets soon enough
(and people are saying that itachi and sasuke were the youngest of the clan im not a 100% on that)
