Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Official Thread - Discussion, Analysis, Predictions & All News!

The first shockmate of this Euro 2012. The favorite of Group A, Russia, is eliminated.

Greece won 1-0 against Russia while Czech won 1-0 against host country, Poland.

- It's definitely a huge surprise to see Russia being eliminated in this Euro. Though, they have a better goal difference than Greece, the new Euro rule states that direct confrontation matters first. Thus, Greece victory gave them the extra plus.

- Russia definitely had a promising team. A team very dangerous on counters mostly but perhaps, the defense wasn't good enough and that was their downfall.

- And obviously, it was harder to pierce a packed defense despite them, having good chances.

- We still saw that Arshavin is a good player at times and a star was born in Dzagoev. Too bad, he couldn't show more of his talent.

- Czech aren't really the most deserving - especially since they finished first but they had the required experience to clinch those 2 victories against 2 "weaker" teams.

- Greece were to stereotypical against Czech while Poland dropped form in the match and handed it to Czech. Congrats to Cech and Co.

- Poland's main problem was the dropping form in this Euro. Despite the home support, they were never able to do a long period of good football. They did a great 45 minutes against Greece, a good 30-40 minutes against Russia and a good 25 minutes against Czech. And on a longer duration, they were eliminated.

- Greece just put another major upset in Euro history after their 2004 win.

- They were last before Matchday 3 but with a good hold-up goal in first half, a courageous display and 2 stellar performances by its captain Karagounis and striker Samaras, they did the impossible and kicked out Russia.

- Given their economic crisis in their country and its political instability, Greece's qualification to quarter-finals will be like a new lease of hope to certain of its people. And it's nice to see football and sports delivering these joy.

- I don't think either Czech or Greeks will go far but they still delivered a thunderbolt by qualifying and this time, it's not climate-related.

I have a feeling the team we least expect to win will do it this tournament. I just have this gut feeling seeing how the tournament is going so far.

There might be a surprise winner but I won't bet on Greece or Czech for that. As I said, Czech have been lucky while Greece were stereotypical but it paid off at the last moment.

If I were to put a penny on a completely surprise winner - I think I'd add it on Denmark or Croatia rather.

I think we'll be in for a roller-coaster of surprises in Groups stages but I think, there'll be less surprises in knock-out stages. At least, I think. Whatsoever, I'm not sure for any groups frankly. Anything is possible.

Greece and Czech can still pull an upset, maybe group stages they weren't too good, but they can step up their game during the KO (they just need a little bit of belief)...We've seen this happen many times.

I don't have any particular team, but I'd say England is also one. As you know I'm not an England supporter, but if they make it to KO stage I can guarantee a defensive approach which could be fetal to Spain/Germany (A nightmare thats come back to haunt them from CL).

KO stages will have plenty of surprises for us indeed. I still believe in Spain are defence is whack ATM, but we can still do it.

To up their games, they need to have the players for it too. But this seem like the best they could give.

May your words come true for England. Insha Allah!

You're being self-critical of Spain's defense since it's your team. However, your defense is on the same level as France and Holland. Sure, it's mediocre but it's not such a whack as you think.

I hope that he doesn't do it at the expense of Affelay though.

True enough, but will see how far they ca go, at least expect a gift from them.

lol. Yes, inshallah Spain win. I heard that Spain and England group winners will be paired off in the first KO phase.

Well, Indeed I am harsh. Just look at what happen with Holland, and France still struggled to VS England. In the long ran it'll effect them heavily.

By the way Messi is becoming a father.

The winner Group C will face up with Runner-Up of Group D. Yeah, there's huge possibility that England vs Spain will happen in QF; considering England might well end second in Group D and Spain has big chances to finish first in their.

Well, it was becoming obvious since some weeks now. How old is Ronaldo's son btw? 1 year or something, right? :p I bet 50 Kumi that Maradona will be Godfather for Messi's child xD

I know. Negredo and Raul Albiol said they rather face England than France ATM. That means we could also see a Italy VS France, or France VS Croatia. France VS Spain is also possible. That means Germany, and/or Holland/Portugal/Denmark get the easier, but tricky opponents.

Ronaldo son is at least 2-3 years old. Ronaldo announced on the 3rd of July, 2010 he was a father. I think his son was MIA till a few months, or a year the most till he find out, or decided to let people know.

Possible, I wouldn't be surprised if one of his Barcelona teammates were seeing that he is settled there (Xavi, Inesita, Fabregas, and/or Puyol). This is going to give Pique naughty ideas :p
