Apparently it makes sense for them all to stand in front of Akainu, say they won't let Akainu get to Luffy and then...all leave once Akainu attacks and not attack back, except for Curiel.

Except they weren't. Akainu was alone, they charged, and we see an explosion. We don't see other Marines joinithim until later.
