Madara was the leader of the uchiha clan alongside his brother as the second commander.
We know that the uchiha clan were the only clan that were strong enough to take down the senju clan.Other clans hired the uchiha clan whenever they have to fight the senju clan on several occasions.If the Senju clan were unbeatable ,madara and his clan would have perish long time ago.The uchiha may have taken down the most of the senju forces but hashirama family remain alive because they were protected by their clan and also because of hashirama unique KG Wood release
After the death of izuna ,madara obatain the ems by izuna sharingan . Madara was fear by alot of clan,at the same time was praise for his power .
From what i understand madara had alll clan respect and Madara maybe capture most of them before he form konoha with the senju clan .
This also show madara clan had control over sarutobi,shino clan,neji clan and the others that currently form konoha
i believe the reason why the senju wanted the uchiha to join forces because they cannot beat them.The senju number were small compare to the uchiha because only hashirama,tobirama were strongest amongst the senju.
They could not find a mate from the senju ,that why mito uzamaki (decendent of the senju) were chosen to mate.The uzamaki number were also small.The uchiha clan number remain healthy even when clans from konoha.
As i said before the uchiha clan were fear by others clans .The formation of konoha was the best choice to understand the uchiha strenght.Since the senju number was small compare to the uchiha ,the senju and the elder use a member from uchiha clan (itachi) to spy on them . The senju clan could not have taken down the clan by themselve,therefore they use itachi to do there dirty work.Itachi was young maybe around his early teen age years,therefore he could have been easy manipulated by the anbu black op organisation .
Wealso know that the uchiha wanted peace ,that why they wanted hashirama as their leader rather than madara.The uchiha did not like the treatment they were recieving so they forming an rebellion.The senju and the elders were afraid so they had to elimate them.

1.The whole point of the thread is that the uchiha who maybe taken over other clans which made up konoha
2The senju clan was small they kinda play best friend witht he uchiha to understand their power,then elimate them.This is similar to the quote we use today "Your best friend could be your worst enemy'
3.Itachi was very young when he join the anbu.He could have been easily manipulated because of his maturity level was small.
4 Senju number were small hashirama-->tobirama--->tsunade ,similar to the saruto clan hiruzen sarutobi and his grand son konohamaru .They were consider to be hokage
5Tsunade is the last senju alive.EDO Madara is perfected.She have not chance for survival unless plot shield
